Orunmila (oh-ROON-mee-lah)

African Deity

Orunmila

Orunmila is the orisha of wisdom, fate, and divination, custodian of Ifá—the sacred system of knowledge through which destiny is interpreted and balanced. He was present at the creation of the world, bearing the blueprints of existence. With calm authority, he reads the coded fabric of life, advising other orisha and humans alike.   He is neither aloof nor cold. Orunmila acts through his babalawo, priest-diviners who interpret his will with cowrie shells. He teaches that no fate is fixed—that knowledge is the first tool of freedom. His devotees seek clarity, not answers; and alignment, not control.
