Nicola (Nee-KOH-lah)

Colapesce, born Nicola, was a young fisherman from a small coastal village in Sicily. Known for his exceptional swimming and diving skills, Nicola's blondish, curly hair, light skin, and youthful features gave him an almost ethereal appearance. His uncanny affinity for the sea made him a beloved, somewhat mystical figure among the locals, who often spoke of him as if he were touched by the sea gods themselves.   One day, driven by an unwavering determination and deep love for his homeland, Nicola dived deeper than ever before, discovering a mysterious underwater pillar supporting the island of Sicily. Realizing the pillar was damaged and the island in peril, Nicola's loyalty and selflessness compelled him to act. In a miraculous moment, the gods, moved by his bravery and devotion, transformed him into one of the Dumu-Abzu, granting him the abilities of a sea guardian. This transformation allowed him to breathe underwater, communicate with sea creatures, and control the ocean currents. His skin took on a subtle shimmer, and his presence became even more captivating.   Now known as Colapesce, he chose to remain beneath the waves, holding up the island and ensuring its safety. His legend grew, and he became a symbol of bravery and eternal vigilance. Colapesce’s story was told and retold, inspiring generations with his selfless act of heroism.   Despite his transformation, Colapesce remained deeply connected to the human world. His calm demeanor and wisdom were a testament to his bond with the sea, but he often felt a sense of isolation. Longing for human connection yet understanding the necessity of his role, he continued to protect his homeland from beneath the waves, a silent guardian of Sicily. His legacy as Colapesce, the merman protector, lived on in the hearts of his people, a timeless tale of sacrifice and love for one's land, earning him a place in Tir na nOg.
