Ix'ni Pec (IX-nee PECK)

Mayan Zesty Salsa

Discover the vibrant flavors of the Yucatán Peninsula with Ix'ni Pec, a traditional Mayan salsa. This zesty blend of fresh ingredients bursts with a unique combination of heat and tang, bringing an authentic taste of Mayan cuisine to your palate.

Recipe Directions

Place in a clay bowl (glass will do) all ingredients, mix gently, let stand for 10 minutes to blend flavors; serve at room temperature as a snack topping or to dress up your grilled meats, fish, or poultry. Should you not find Habanero chile in your area, use fresh serrano or jalapeño chile as a substitute. This salsa stays truly fresh for up to 3 hours; we do not recommend that you refrigerated any leftover salsa because fresh tomatoes tend to ferment easily.

History

Ix'ni Pec is a testament to the Mayan's mastery of flavors, using local ingredients to create a salsa that is both refreshing and fiery, much like the spirit of the Yucatán itself. This salsa is a staple in Mayan households, often served with meals to add a burst of flavor and heat, representing the lively and bold culinary culture of the Mayans.
