Irralik Vostayn (a.k.a. Alpan)
Most know him as Alpan, though his given name, Irralik, lives in the deep recesses of childhood. He spends his days coaxing shape from stone and form from wood, not by force, but by intuition. His workshop is scattered with half-finished pieces and curious forms that seem both ancient and impossible. Each sculpture appears to lean toward the viewer slightly, as if mid-whisper.
He speaks to his materials with the same softness he uses in conversation. It’s not unusual to hear murmured reassurances to a stubborn block of marble or a polite apology to a splintered beam. Alpan does not impose vision—he listens for it. He claims that every piece already knows what it wants to be, and his only job is to listen until the form becomes obvious. Visitors to his space often describe the atmosphere as "almost dreaming."
When he’s not carving, Alpan can be found tracing the lines of trees, collecting naturally twisted branches or shells shaped like curls of smoke. His touch is deliberate, reverent. The few sculptures he gives away are gifted in silence, handed over with both palms, like a blessing or a goodbye. He never signs his work. “If it finds its way to someone,” he says, “then it’s finished enough.”
