Dewi Sri (DEH-wee SREE)

South-East Asian Deity

Dewi Sri

Dewi Sri is the radiant rice goddess of Java, Bali, and much of island Southeast Asia. She governs fertility, nourishment, and the green pulse of agrarian life. Where she walks, rice grows sweet and plentiful. She is a maternal spirit who carries both birth and mourning—her myth speaks of sacrifice, for she died to bless the earth, and from her body sprang rice, bananas, and all that sustains.   She is honored in kitchen altars and field shrines alike. Her rituals involve intricate offerings, harvest songs, and sacred dolls made of woven grain. She teaches that abundance comes from giving, and that beauty lies in devotion—not possession.
