Ame-no-Uzume (AH-meh-noh-OO-zoo-meh)

East Asian Deity

Ame-no-Uzume

Ame-no-Uzume is the irrepressible goddess of revelry, dawn, and mirth—known throughout the heavens as the one whose laughter brought back the sun. When Amaterasu hid herself in the Celestial Rock Cave, plunging the world into shadow, Uzume overturned a washtub and danced upon it in wild, bawdy abandon. Her uninhibited joy stirred the other gods to laughter and curiosity, creating a raucous chorus that lured Amaterasu from hiding and returned light to the world. In this act, Uzume did more than entertain—she mediated cosmic balance through joy.   Yet she is not merely a divine jester. Uzume governs liminality: the hush before sunrise, the crack in solemnity where hope seeps in. She delights in upending hierarchy and despair through celebration. Where others rule through control, she commands with irreverent wisdom. She is the spirit in festival drums, the whisper in laughter at funerals, the breath held just before a new beginning.
