Gitte (GEET)
A simple industrial town set in the middle of open plain/farmland and immediately east of Giant's Thumb (a large, lone rock formation East of the Elarian plateau), Gitte is the home of about 1200 people who are mostly miners and farmers. Gitte was established recently, about 2 years ago, when new mining resources of copper, tin and useful minerals was discovered in Giant's Thumb. Before that, Gitte was simply a Patrol Station, a small military outpost for patrol supply and mount refresh.
The town center is plain and a bit dusty with a few buildings made of a combination of mud-brick on the bottom few feet of the structures and wood plank on the top half with thatched roofs. The streets themselves are simply packed-down dirt. The place is active during the day and especially early morning as people walk around, pull carts, deliver goods, etc. A whistle blows three times per day to mark shift changes in the mines.
On the north side of town, there is a small guard post (one tower) with its own basic armorer, leather worker, and blade sharpening wheel. They don’t see many travelers, and the children especially are very curious when new people arrive or pass through.
There are two taverns, a kind of inn, a general store, an apothecary/clothing store, and a few merchant booths near the town well.
Taverns/Inns:
Gitte has two taverns. One is a tavern only (Ale), the other is a tavern and a nicer barracks for mine workers (The Stone Bowl), and some smaller/nicer rooms for when other people stay in town. Ale -- (Poor tavern) Simply named, the tavern keep, Gus Hearn (human), wanted to be drunk all the time and avoid working in the mines, so he opened a business in town that would allow him to do both those things. He brews watery ale in the back, so he doesn’t have to pay anyone else for it. The Stone Bowl -- (modest tavern/inn) Flora Takurn (dwarf) runs the tavern and inn with the help of her mom, Ametrine Fireforge, and cousin Wynn Fireforge. Together, they have a tavern with good food and a friendly atmosphere, a lodge for miners to stay in that's less of a cheap dorm and more like a home, complete with house rules.Shops:
General Store -- Locally owned and family run, this shop provides the basic necessities an average towns person and occasional traveler might need. Green Thumb Apothecary -- For all of your medicinal and plant-based needs. Town Square market -- about half a dozen booths selling various items from local produce, delicious hand pies, to pickaxes.Leyvarr Guard
Guard Post:
A large wooden structure with a lone watchtower built into one corner stands at the edge of town. The wood on the center part of the structure is a weathered grey and looks older than the much richer wood of additional structures. Currently under construction.Government
The locals deal with matters via the Town Council -- a group of 4 people who together with the local archivist and the ranking officer at the Post make larger decisions that affect the town. Locals will often go to these individuals to settle disputes or concerns.
If a matter is larger than the town or involves a solution outside the town (or resources outside it), then the council brings up the issue with the Earl/Duke.
Taxes are collected via the Earl, once per season (4 times per year) and is based on excess. Less tax is collected over the winter, since most of the harvest is in the late summer and fall. Taxes are also not always coin, but can also be an increased military service, crops, livestock, etc.
Industry & Trade
Mining of copper ore and Tin in the nearby Giant's Thumb rock formation. Local farmers grow Barely and Flax and have some livestock for local use.
Guilds and Factions
The Adventurer's Tavern is partnered with The Stone Bowl as a pitstop location. The Builder's Guild sent a person to keep new construction up to regulations, as well as another person to make sure the mine is being run adequately. The two share an office near the miner's lodge. The Leyvarr Guard has a small Post in town, run by a Lieutenant.
History
Before the discovery of the mining resources nearby, there were just a handful of homesteads farming barley and flax that were leftover from the small towns that popped up and died after quarrying the edge of the stone fields (27-33 AP) and the nearby mining pits. However, since the recent discovery of the valuable resources of tin, copper and useful minerals in Giant's Thumb, the area has boomed almost overnight into an exciting, yet very small mining focused town. Flora Takurn, an orginal inhabitant of the area, gathered her family and built an Inn and Tavern for miners needing a more homey place to stay is really the heart of the town.
Architecture
The vast majority of structures are built using a clean mud-brick on the bottom 4 feet of the building and wood beam and planks above that. Wood beams are used for the roof structure, and grain thatch and sealed fabric is used for the roof.
This allows the buildings to stay cool during the summer and warm during winter and more durable against the winds.
Geography
Mostly flat and gently rolling plains. A large, lone boulder formation juts out from the land, called Giant's Thumb. It's nearly a mile wide and reaches over 60 feet in height.
Climate
temperate-arid grassland. Spring rains green things up a bit, the summers are long and hot, but good for grain crops. Fall brings storms/rain and winters are windy.
Natural Resources
Land is good for growing hardier crops such as grain. The Giant's Thumb recently provided a newly discovered mining vein
