Dwarf

Dwarves, who call themselves The Dwur, are a hardy and ancient race, renowned for their stout frames, long braided beards, and piercing eyes that seem to hold the wisdom of the centuries. Standing no taller than four to five feet, their compact and muscular builds speak to a life of labor and resilience. Their skin tones range from earthy browns to pale stone-like hues, often weathered from years spent in subterranean forges or mountainous strongholds. Known for their intricate craftsmanship, the Dwarves are master smiths, jewelers, and stoneworkers, creating goods of unparalleled beauty and durability. Fiercely loyal to their clans, they hold honor, tradition, and kinship in the highest regard. With an affinity for the underground, they are most at home within vast, echoing halls carved into mountains, their cities glowing with the light of crystal lamps and rivers of molten metal. Though wary of outsiders, the Dwarves are formidable allies and unyielding foes, embodying the very stone and steel they cherish.

Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals

Dwarven Punishment: when a dwarf has committed an offense against their family, community, or nation a common punishment is banishment for a period of time (the worse the offense, the longer the sentence). Banishment begins with a public shaving — usually just the head and face. In the case of a truly heinous crime an offender’s entire body is shaved. If an offender is repentant, they are often allowed the dignity of shaving themselves (or choosing another to shave them). After the public shaving the offender is then escorted / chased away. This is an incredibly shameful experience for a dwarf (and their family / friends). If the offender has a mate, their mate is entitled to an immediate annulment of their marriage if they wish. Or they may share their mate’s shame and leave with them (or remain and be shunned).   Dwarven Quirk: dwarves find scars to be beautiful and ritual scarring is often used to mark momentous occasions of a dwarf’s life. Dwarves will often admire and compliment others on their scars.

History

The Dwarves of Ehrto are a resilient people with a storied but tragic history. Once, their grand kingdoms flourished in the heart of the Crystalline Mountains, their halls glimmering with the light of precious gemstones and their forges ablaze with industry. However, this golden age ended during the Twin Calamities, a cataclysmic series of events that shattered their strongholds and reduced their mighty cities to rubble. The last High King of the Dwur, Durrek Silverhelm, perished in the chaos, and with him, the legendary Axe of the Dwarvish Lords was lost—an artifact of immense power and a symbol of unity for their people. In the aftermath, the Dwur found themselves scattered and leaderless. During the Great Migrations that followed, many clans were forced to seek refuge beyond the mountains, allying with elves, gnomes, and even some human lands to survive. Today, the Dwur Kingdom of Aglarhün stands as the final bastion of the Dwarves' once-glorious heritage, its ancient halls fiercely guarded by proud descendants of the old clans. Beyond its borders, scattered enclaves of Dwarves endure across Eastern Urik, clinging to their traditions and yearning for the unity they lost.
