Vengaro

For Swordtember #2: Moss
"Another glade, burnt to ashes by the Hippolytans. For being children of the land, those with a deep tie to nature, you'd think that they'd care more for it. But then again, the Orcs and outlanders used this glade to find food, so perhaps they didn't see it as their land.
I tend to stay out of politics, the machinations of witches give me enough of a headache. But, in this instance, I felt drawn to it. Lo and behold, the glade itself wanted revenge.
I was happy to oblige.

One of The Sword Witch's personal weapons, Vengaro takes the appearance of a simple piece of charred bark, yet when activated it's magic, which takes the form of ash colored moss making the "blade", it is a force to be reckoned with.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

The magic behind Vengaro was crafted from the souls of those killed by Hippolytan supremacy, and is fueled by them as well. When the magic is activated, a blade of ashen moss extends from the charred handle, and anyone cut by the blade not only suffers a burning sting, but also finds their wound covered in the same ashen moss.

This is where the second part of the magic behind the sword comes in, as once the ashen moss is on their body, they are given one chance out: agree to the terms and conditions set by the wielder, or have your body quickly consumed by the moss along with the burning pain, until it burns away your entire form. In the instance The Sword Witch wielded it, her terms were that the Elves responsible for the murder first apologized sincerely for their wrongdoing, followed by agreeing to regrow the glades they had burned, and ceasing their attacks against the Orcs and outlanders. If they were not genuine or went back on their word until the conditions were finished, they would be consumed all the same.

Out of 30 people responsible for the burning that facilitated the creation of Vengaro, 27 were consumed by its magic, with the remaining 3 agreeing and mostly fulfilling the terms. Magic contracts are rarely air-tight, after all.

History

It is unknown exactly when the following events occurred, but given the circumstances it would've had to happen post-Wild Wall emergence. It is also unknown what caused The Sword Witch to visit the material plane from her extraplanar abode and directly involve herself.

What Is known is as follows: an order of Hippolytan soldiers set a particular glade on fire, which was visited frequently by Orcs and other outlanders (those who refused to live in the cities ruled by the Elves) as a source of foraged food and a popular spot for game hunting. Nothing was left of it but ash, and while nothing of the like was recorded down, rumors are abound that the The Royal Gardeners used these incidents to commit mass murder of their 'undesirables' as well.

According to The Sword Witch's diary, something about this particular event drew her nearer, despite her apathy for mortal politics. When she arrived, witnessing the devastation, she claimed that the glade itself sought out revenge, and that she deigned to oblige it.

Shortly after, The Sword Witch stormed into the capitol and hunted down those responsible, as none could stop her once she put her intent behind her actions, and struck them with her sword forged from that forsaken glade, Vengaro. Weaving it with magic of compulsion and punishment, she gave her victims two options: repair the land properly and cease the desecration and murders, or be consumed by the vengeful magic of the blade. Enough chose the former after enough chose the latter and death as a consequence.

The glades were restored, although nothing could return the lives lost as Hippolyta continued their pogroms against those they saw as undesirable. But, the instance that called her close was avenged, yet she kept the blade in her personal storage where it, supposedly, remains to this day.
