Surf Piercer
"This blade was one of my more impulsive creations. I was trying to board a ship for a small reprieve, and yet the captain would not budge for the presence of rather brutal Merfolk in the waters, seeking to sink ships and slay sailors. So, with a lack of options and patience alike, I combed the beach for a proper shell, and upon finding one quickly dispatched them. My vacation was splendid."
One of the many weapons first crafted by The Sword Witch, passed down and imitated throughout the centuries. First crafted from a mollusc spire, as a weapon it has the piercing ability of a rapier, combined with a shells durability as a handguard.
Some alternate designs have been made, which resemble weapons such as lances or daggers more than rapiers, and even a model that is worn like a gauntlet over one arm, but the Surf Piercer blade was the original.
Mechanics & Inner Workings
The Surf Piercer, original and duplicates alike, don't have any inherent magical or mechanical functions. However, thanks to the grooves along the shell and the spiraling shape of it, it is very efficient in quick jabs, especially underwater. The shape also allows for it to perform drilling as well, a tactic favored by Merfolk when fighting
Manufacturing process
When forged from metal or other non-oceanic materials, a Surf Piercer tends to begin with a central sharp blade, the width of a standard rapier. The pieces to make the handle and handguard are attached next, and the spiraling shape of the blade is added afterwards. This tends to be a meticulous and exacting task, as the smooth spiral of a Surf Piercer is one of its greatest features.
When made by the magical manipulation of oceanic materials as many Merfolk do, it is far simpler, as the blade is able to be slowly forged and manipulated from the shells rather than requiring assembly.
The original Surf Piercer was one of The Sword Witch's creations, and therefore is a part of her grand horde. Some of her weapons have made their way into Edda at large, but they are few and far between.
Duplicates made from her designs, however, tend to be more common in oceanic or coastal areas. It is uncommon for land dwelling people to have them, but many Merfolk wield them.
Surf Piercer was made from a simple mollusc spire on the beach, enchanted and transformed by the power of The Sword Witch. Replicants are typically made either from steel in the shape of a shell, or from magically strengthened and molded shells known as Seasteel.
