If These Owls Could Talk
“If These Owls Could Talk” is the colloquial name for a supernatural law in Eden which grants all beings the temporary ability to understand and speak with owls. Five days per year, on the days that three or more of the Five Moons of Eden dance together in the sky, the owls of Eden are allowed to share their wisdom with those who could otherwise not grasp the meaning of a single hoot.
The five days in question, according to the Gregorian calendar still used by many Earthling refugees, are April 1, July 1, September 30, December 30, and December 31. The three moons essential to the magic are the Green, Red, and Blue. And Talking Owl Evenings are celebrated across the world as holidays, though only the two days of The Festival of the Five Moons (December 30–31) are mandated as days of rest and relaxation by the Council of Five.
Manifestation
From sunset to sunrise on the appointed days, every sapient being in Eden is fluent in the many languages of the Strigidae and the Tytonidae. They are able to understand the language when it is spoken and are even able to speak it themselves if they listen carefully for long enough. That last bit is quite important, as those who attempt to speak the owl languages without first listening almost always end up making fools of themselves.
Localization
The effects of this supernatural law do not extend beyond the realm of Eden. Nowhere else in the Clarkwoods Literary Universe is this particular kind of communication possible, though there may be some who have found other ways—technological or magical—to speak with these magnificent and magnificently intelligent birds.
It is also important to note that attempts to document these languages have universally failed. Though the desire to communicate with the owls outside of the appointed days is understandable, the Sister Goddesses just won’t have it.
That said, some sorcerers and wizards take owls into their service as familiars and kept them close year-round. That way, when one of the five days comes around, they don’t have to go hunting in the forest for an owl to chat with and learn from!
