Summer Camp 2024: Pledge and Homework

So, this year, I've been kept busy with new roles, responsibilities, and a new relationship. I've also been hard at work writing the first draft of my novel The Unhallowed. So, with all of that, I haven't had as much time to devote to prep for Summer Camp 2024. I am super excited to begin in July however, working on my Summer Camp posts, but the leadup to July has just been crazy. So, I've decided to more loosely prep for Summer Camp this time around, so I'll be posting updates to my prep more infrequently and probably in a more overview type manner than any sort of in-depth detail.

WEEK 1: CHANGE

Assignment 1: Honestly, I believe I could do 4-5 articles per week. It'll be a bit of a marathon to do that, but if I write one article at lunch per week, I think I'll be golden.   Assignment 2: If I do five articles a week, for four weeks, that is 30 articles. Assuming I miss one of two days, I should fall somewhere between 25 and 30 articles. Given that I made it to Silver last year, I think this is do-able. Hence, I am pledging to go for Gold this year.   Assignment 3: Last year, I spent considerable time reorganizing categories. So, I am largely leaving it alone. I have started creating temporary category areas to hold articles while writing in July, but I am generally very happy with my world encyclopedia categorization. I will start taggin new articles with #sc24 and related tags, however.   Assignment 4: So, this is one area I am skipping a bit this year. taking a look at my meta, it still holds up for my general goals related to Ebilar. Specific to this year, I want to focus more on fleshing out elements to be incorporated directly into my novel, but I am sure I'll also keep writing about general world building stuff too. Short answer, I am not making adjustments to meta at this point, as I redid some of it not to long ago. Meta is largely up-to-date.

WEEK 2: REFUGE

Assignment 1: So, I will be spending a bit more time this summer camp zeroing in on refuges broadly, so this theme was on point for me this year. In my novel, a large scale conflict is what I am beginning to write about, and it will involve the razing of several massive cities and cultural hubs. There is going to be a mass exodus of refugees and reorganization of governments, soldiers, armies, and resources. Thus, I will be focusing on the following related to refuges in the world of Ebilar:
  • Hammerhenge Keep and the Vault
  • The Ferries of Thalon River
  • Venzor
  • The Iron Lake Citadel
Assignment 2: My grandmother has been very generously reading and helping edit the first draft of the Unhallowed. She has agreed to help keep me accountable throughout July, as I keep expanding my worldbuilding for the novel series. I also have a few friends (some of the individuals who inspired characters from the Unhallowed that I plan to reach out to throughout July to check-in, get some motivation, and brainstorm some ideas.   Assignment 3: I am going to try to make the articles I post a little smoother to read, but I am not admittedly good at CSS work. So, I'll focus more on styling from a writing standpoint. I plan to try to structure articles in a more clear, concise manner. I simply wont have time to devote to overhauling CSS-level styling.   Assignment 4: See comment above, haha. I suck at CSS. I'll start doing some review of how to improve minor CSS stuff, but I wont be spending a lot of time. For a start, I just figured out how to split this article into four collums to address assignments for SC24 prep.

WEEK 3: BELIEF

Assignment 1: I really want to spend time fleshing out both the Ebonfaith Brotherhood and the Ebonfaith Pantheon a bit more. That will involve fleshing out some of the principle deity-figures on the Ebonfaith side of the equation (essentially the political leaders of the abyssal realms). I also want to really tease out the religion surrounding the central god-figure Aewalin which predominates in Ebilar. The religion around Aewalin is broken into sects, similar to the Christian church, and I would like to detail out history, tenets, and teachings related to the generic religion as well as the individual sects. These will be crucial to the next steps of writing the Unhallowed. One huge piece that needs to get fleshed out, is why Aewalin has appeared to be largely absent since the Hallowing War, and how Aewalin will begin to intervene at the novel progresses.   Assignment 2: I have created a seperate article located here to collect quotes that will help moving forward.   Assignment 3: I'm not big on using reference images in my writing. I know I probably should, and maybe I'll start this year. But generally, it hasn't been something that's bene part of my workflow in the past. Any reference images I have, are generally AI-generated from prompts and concepts I've already written. That said, I am huge into using music as a reference for theme and emotion in my writing, so like last year for WorldEmber, I am starting to pull together a Spotify playlist for Summer Camp 2024.   Assignment 4: This assignment isn't super relevant, since I am creating a new reference bank (see notes for assignment 2 and 3 above) from scratch this year for Summer Camp 2024.

WEEK 4: Decay

Assignment 1: There are several aspects of decay coming up in the world of Ebilar, and the story of the Unhallowed. For starters, moral decay, is a big one. There are several governmental, moralistic, religious, etc. organizations that will be impacted negatively by the events of the story in the Unhallowed. Similarly, the main characters will be moving through sections of the world which show remnants of the past civilizations that existed during and before the first Hallowing War. So, structures will be a big one that needs more description. Also, culturally, there will be a lot of decay. I have written in the past about the Asha'Haid, a sub-group of elves who joined with the Unhallowed armies after their defeat in the northern reaches. They are far from the only group that fell into cultural decline. Essentially, as the events of the first two Unhallowed novels progress, the continent will fall back to looking like it did pre- and during the first Hallowing War, and worse.   Assignment 2: I need coffee to allow the creative juices to flow. So, in preparation of Summer Camp, I have purchased a ton of my favorite coffee, and have a ton of loose-leaf teas sorted out into mason jars in my cabinet. I also started getting my computer area at the house in order. I am a notorious pack-rat when it comes to my desk space. Often there are notes, and notebooks, random books, and other miscellaneous items taking up space on the desk. I've started putting things away and getting the desk space cleared off.   Assignment 3: I am not going to worry about the homepage. I am not good at CSS and layout. I will get around to that some other time.   Assignment 4: Author profile is updated. And with that, my Summer Camp 2024 homework is complete.
