Hanzo Grimm

Hanzo is an Aereni elf from the ancient noble family House Grimm. As a youth, Hanzo was fascinated with the history of the Empire of Dhakaan, especially since so much of it remained shrouded in mystery. Convinced that his personal path to immorality lay in becoming the foremost scholar of lost Dhakani tradition, he left Aerenal in 348 YK determined to do just that.   This proved exceedingly difficult as much of the knowledge he sought was (he would learn centuries later) sealed within a vast, forgotten system of tunnels and vaults beneath the Seawall Mountains. Rather than abandon his pursuit, Hanzo chose to learn through practice. He befriended several hobgoblin clans and eventually began living with the Ghaal'dar clan, learning everything he could and compiling his clan's knowledge with that of any other of the dar (goblin for "the people") who would speak to him. Recognizing that weaponry was of special importance in hobgoblin culture, Hanzo threw himself into smithing, learning at the feet of any dar blade crafter he could. Elven longevity and Aereni single-minded pursuit of excellence meant that, after 200 years of this, he was not only the greatest living swordsmith in the Dhakaani tradition, he was the greatest single repository of the techniques and applications of that tradition.   He became a respected counselor and teacher. He would never be dar, but that was not his aim. He wanted to become a great scholar of lost Dhakaani knowledge, and he succeeded. He knew more about that lost empire than any mortal on the globe...or so he thought until the day the Heirs of Dhakaan emerged from the tunnels where they'd hidden for eons and joined the fledgling nation of Darguun.

Mental characteristics

Accomplishments & Achievements

Is widely considered the world's premiere swordsmith in the Dhakaani tradition. Hanzo blades are spoken of with reverence by swordmasters and blacksmiths. They are precious heirlooms to those who own them and objects of covetous avarice to those who don't. He will rarely craft a blade for a non-dar and never for anyone without an honorable or heroic resumé as a warrior, no matter what price is offered. It is not uncommon for Hanzo to work on a blade for a year or more before it is ready, so while he has crafted many weapons over the centuries, his work remains rare, even in Darguun.

Failures & Embarrassments

Although he is accepted as an honorary member of the goblin community in Darguun, Hanzo has yet to be accepted by any of the clans who call themselves the Heirs of Dhakaan. These clans, especially the Kech Volaar ("Word-bearers"), have unique and valuable information about the old empire that Hanzo hopes to one day earn.

Next Notes: The empire of Dhakaan was very similar to feudal Japan in our game, so Hanzo makes Japanese-style weaponry, especially katanas. Because it's Eberron, minor spell work is used to make the blades stronger, more keen, or more beautiful, but the real "magic" is in the technique, patience, and attention to detail.
