King Boranel ir'Wynarn

King Boranel ir'Wynarn is the monarch of the nation of Breland. Instrumental in negotiating the Treaty of Thronehold, he is one of the most popular rulers that Breland has ever known. He is a wise ruler, and has made decisions that show his clear concern for the well-being of his citizens.   King Boranel is the third son of Boranex ir'Wynarn, the previous King of Breland. Boranel's two older brothers died in the Last War, and his younger brother Kor ir'Wynarn is the commander of the King's Citadel. Growing up, Boranel recieved a broad education with a focus on the arts of war. As an adult, Boranel served in the Brelish army, rising swiftly through the ranks to become a general due to his merits.   Despite this primarily battle-driven personal history, King Boranel was one of the first to see the fruitlessness of the war. Even though his nation was one of the most successful, he knew it would never end in a manner satisfactory to any nation, even the victor. It was difficult to simply withdraw from the war, as the animosity built up over decades of war would not merely disappear; your enemies would almost certainly continue to attack you. Thus, when The Mourning hit in 994 YK, King Boranel seized the opportunity to commence talks of peace, and continued to be a key proponent of the Treaty of Thronehold.

Early Life

King Boranel is the third son of Boranex ir'Wynarn, the previous King of Breland. Boranel's two older brothers died in the Last War, but his four sisters and three younger brothers remain alive. Growing up, Boranel received a broad education with a focus on the arts of war. His most memorable teacher was a Valenar elf named Eliri. The impressionable young prince fell in love with her, but it was never meant to be.   As an adult, Boranel served in the Brelish army, rising swiftly through the ranks to become a general due to his merits. He also found time to be a great treasure hunter in Vrigan, and sought out tremendous wealth in the ruins of that land on two separate expeditions.

King of Breland

After his father's death, Boranel was summoned from Sharn to be crowned king of Breland, a title he never expected to have. His 37 years of rule is the longest reign by one ruler in Breland's short history.

The Last War

Early on in Boranel's reign the king negotiated an alliance with the gnomes of Zilargo, a deal that secured Zilargo's independence from Breland but also assured Breland of a staunch ally and gnomish technology.   As king of Breland, Boranel immediately began to oversee Breland's participation in the Last War and personally fought and commanded troops on at least 6 major engagements. In 976 YK, during a battle at Brey Crossing, Boranel found himself cut off from the rest of the Brelish army, when a contingent of warforged led by Three fought to his side and held a bridge across the Brey River until the main army could launch a counterattack. Grateful for the warforged's assistance, Boranel appointed them his personal bodyguard, and Three as Royal Protector.   In 987 YK, with a rise in violence in the region of Droaam, Boranel ordered a withdrawal of Brelish citizens from west of the Graywall Mountains. Boranel personally fought and defeated an ogre chieftain in single combat to allow a group of Brelish refugees to cross the mountains.

Day of Mourning and Treaty of Thronehold

Weary of ruling over a period of strife and warfare, Boranel began to develop a tremendous desire for peace. When Cyre was destroyed on the Day of Mourning in 994 YK, Boranel was one of the chief leaders calling for peace. He was one of the main negotiators of the Treaty of Thronehold and is tireless in its defense. His efforts to broker a compromise between Aundair and Thrane over Thaliost during peace talks were instrumental in ensuring the Treaty was signed.   When Cyran refugees began pouring into Breland after the Day of Mourning, King Boranel was responsible for Breland's accepting of Cyran refugees, and gave Viscount Okeanos Tsitak permsission to found the town of New Cyre on Brelish territory.   King Boranel also used his reign to improve on the rights of warforged. In 986 YK he championed legislation in the Brelish parliament to emancipate Brelish warforged upon the conclusion of the war, and he was the negotiator mainly responsible for the general emancipation of warforged by the Treaty of Thronehold.

Post-War

Since the end of the war, King Boranel continues to keep Breland's borders well guarded and tries to maintain the uneasy peace between the Five Nations. The Brelish military continues to have skirmishes with the forces of Droaam on the western border, and Boranel ensured Droaam was not recognized as a sovereign nation at the Treaty of Thronehold.   During the war, House Kundarak made significant loans to Breland, however in peace time King Boranel has been running behind on repaying the loans, concerning the bankers of House Kundarak.

Personal Life

Boranel's main residence is Brokenblade Castle in Breland's Capital of Wroat. He only spends about a third of each year at the castle, as he does a great deal of travelling around Breland visiting forts or holding town meetings, as well as visiting foreign countries. He also keeps secondary residences in Sharn and Starilaskur, and has a retreat at Castle Arakhain.   Boranel has outlived three wives with whom he had eleven children, namely six sons and five daughters. Boranel's first wife was Lady Chaseva ir'Maasat, a noble from Cyre, and their romance across enemy lines was popularized in the press. Chaseva bore him four children. However, their happiness came to an end when Queen Chaseva was murdered by assassins of unknown origin. At least two of his children died in the Last War. His son Prince Boramil perished during the Battle of Marguul Pass, while his oldest daughter Princess Borann perished leading a Brelish army in Cyre on the Day of Mourning. His eldest remaining son is Prince Cornelius ir'Wynarn.   Several members of the royal family have positions in royal administration. His younger brother Kor ir'Wynarn is his chief advisor and the commander of the King's Citadel, while Boranel's son Bortan is the royal steward in charge of the crown's finances. The King's youngest daughter, Brela, spends more time in Castle Arakhain than in the capital, and loves to hunt and to ride. As part of the Treaty of Thronehold, Boranel's children Halix and Borina were sent to King Kaius III's court in Karrnath, while Kaius's sister Haydith ir'Wynarn resides at Boranel's court in Wroat.   While Boranel is a massively popular king, his children are not as popular, leading many to be concerned about the succession when the king dies. Some quietly advocate for an abolishment of the monarchy entirely and for Breland to become a full democracy on Boranel's death, with many unsure of Prince Cornelius' ability to rule. Others are uneasy about questioning the legitimacy of a royal successor, as that is what sparked the Last War and its everlasting tribulations.   The King has two magebred ghost tigers that he keeps as pets.
