Watchers of the Sea
A cautionary tale told to children to keep them from going to Mistbay on their own.
There once was a little boy who wanted to go to Mistbay. 'Beware ye', his father said, 'for sometimes, in the early hours of the morning, when the ocean is still obscured by mist, the Watchers of the Sea can be found wandering the shores of Mistbay, hunting for prey. Be ye' big or small, they'll drag you under to their cave and feast on your flesh.'
But the little boy did not listen. One morning, curious as he was, he snuck out and went to the bay. It was misty there, as it was every morning. The boy looked around, astonished by how beautiful the bay looked with the light of the rising sun, shimmering in golden and red hues on the mist. Awestruck, he took a step forward - and another and another - until he felt water filling up his lungs and saltwater burning in eyes. He had walked all the way into the sea, losing track of the shore. While losing consciousness, he felt an invisible tuck, pulling him along the currents.
When the boy next woke, shivering in his wet cloths, he found himself in a cave with a large body of glacial blue water and curious glowing plants he had never seen before. 'So you have awoken.' said a hauntingly beautiful voice to his left. He turned towards the voice to find the lovliest creature he had ever laid eyes upon, with long hair flowing like waves and eyes the colour of the sea. Before he could reply, the creature smiled, showing razorsharp teeth.
The boy was never seen again.
Historical Basis
There has always been a suspiciously high amount of people going missing at and near Mistbay. Sometimes they washed back ashore later, and sometimes just parts of them were. If there is a source for this other than carelessness, it has never been found.
Spread
One would be hard-pressed to find a citizen of Starharbor who does not know this tale. Many of the people living in other parts of the continent will have heard of this at least in passing. Seeing as it is a local legend, knowledge of this tale is mostly limited to the continent of Cadalyn.
