Pridwin

The Shining Remnant

"On a cold winter's dawn, I found myself standing at the entrance of Pridwin, the Mountain City, a place where time seemed to dance to its own slow rhythm. The rising sun was bathing the city in a golden light that made the stone structures gleam. From the Terrace of Dawn to the lofty Castle Peak, every layer of Pridwin seemed to shimmer, revealing the city's soul, forged in the crucible of trials and tribulations.
The city was awakening, and with it, the cacophony of daily life. Vendors were opening their stalls, the air filling with the inviting aroma of freshly baked bread. Children ran past me, their laughter echoing through the streets, while scholars in the Terrace of Wisdom hurried to their morning lessons, their robes flapping in the chilly morning wind.
Yet, as I climbed higher, the city's bustling vibrancy began to fade. Upon reaching the Terrace of Harmony, I noticed the quiet reverence of the citizens, their heads bowed in silent prayer at the various shrines. And then, the Castle Peak, the abode of the Council. The grand castle, usually a beacon of hope, felt solemn and subdued. The Council members walked with heavy hearts, their faces marked with lines of worry and exhaustion.
The city was like a faded tapestry. Each thread wove a tale of resilience and unity, of dreams nurtured, and hopes realized. But the same threads also told stories of battles fought, of loved ones lost, and of the fading glimmer in the hearts of its citizens.
In the heart of Accordia, Pridwin, the city of layered hopes and shared dreams, was a reflection of its people's undying spirit. But it was also a poignant reminder of the toll taken by past conflicts and the relentless march of time. The city's fading glimmer wasn't just an architectural or aesthetic phenomenon, it was a reflection of the collective soul of its people. Pridwin was a mirror held up to the face of Accordia, reflecting the nation's struggle to balance its ambition to forge ahead with the burden of its legacy. But even as the shadow of its past fell upon the city, Pridwin stood unbowed, a stalwart testament to the resilience of the Accordian spirit, a beacon of 'Hope Amid Ruin'."
- Halberd Thorne Accordian Chronicler
Perched atop the resolute heart of Accordia, Pridwin towers over the nation as a testament to the resilience and tenacity of its people. Like a steadfast monarch crowned by the craggy peaks of a mountain, it stands unbowed, its stoic silhouette painted against the broad canvas of the sky. It is a city that rose, layer upon layer, from the ashes of its past, and through the ages, its gleaming spires have reached toward the heavens as if to grasp a brighter future for its citizens.

Humans (Accordians): 60% - Humans, as the native inhabitants of Accordia, comprise the majority of Pridwin's population. They are involved in all sectors, from governance to commerce, military, and cultural institutions.   Dwarves (Khazadthuri): 25% - Given the proximity to the Khazadthur, a significant percentage of Pridwin's population is Dwarven. They are largely involved in trade, craftsmanship, and mining activities. Some have settled permanently, contributing to the unique cultural mix of the city.   Yorins: 7% - As Accordia is a trade nation, it attracts Yorins from various regions who are looking for new opportunities. They can be found in a range of professions, often related to trade, innovation, and arcane arts.   Gnomes: 5% - These small, intelligent beings bring their unique skills and culture to Pridwin, often working in innovative industries, such as magical artifacts crafting, alchemical potion brewing, or in the city's various guilds.   Elves (Talaran): 2% - Though relatively few in number, Talaran elves bring a touch of elegance and a deep connection to nature to Pridwin. They often serve as scholars, scribes, or diplomats and play a crucial role in maintaining Accordia's diplomatic ties with other nations.   Other: 1% - This category includes various other races, including but not limited to, halflings, half-orcs, and individuals from other lesser-known races. Government

Pridwin is governed as a part of the broader nation of Accordia, under the jurisdiction of the Accordian Council of Harmony (ACH). The ACH, located at the heart of Pridwin in the castle, administers the city.

Governance

The governance is divided among the councilors of the ACH, each handling a distinct area such as security, trade, diplomacy, infrastructure, cultural affairs, and environmental conservation. Day-to-day decisions are made collectively by the council, while major decisions may involve wider community participation. In the spirit of democracy, citizen assemblies are often organized where residents of Pridwin can voice their concerns and opinions.

Law and Order

The law of Pridwin is primarily based on the broader legal code of Accordia, with additional specific regulations to address local needs. The city has its own judiciary system, including courts and legal representatives. A city guard, comprised mainly of humans but also with a fair representation of the other races present in Pridwin, maintains order and enforces the law. Minor disputes are often handled through local community councils, which promote harmony and social cohesion.

Taxation

The ACH levies taxes on various activities to fund public goods and services. These taxes include income taxes, trade tariffs, property taxes, and fees for certain services. A special council of tax collectors is responsible for the fair and orderly collection of taxes. Efforts are made to ensure the tax system is progressive, not burdening those with lower incomes excessively.

Infrastructure and Public Services

Pridwin boasts a well-planned infrastructure, including public buildings, roads, and marketplaces. The city also offers a range of public services such as health care, education, and waste management. The ACH oversees these services, often outsourcing them to various guilds and organizations to ensure efficiency and quality.

Trade and Economy

Being a trade city, the economic life of Pridwin is vibrant and diverse. The ACH regulates trade and commerce, issuing licenses, managing trade routes, and ensuring fair competition. The economic policies of Pridwin align with Accordia's broader goal of economic rebuilding and fostering a healthy market economy.   Through these mechanisms, the ACH ensures that Pridwin remains a thriving and harmonious city, promoting peace, prosperity, and social cohesion among its diverse inhabitants.

Industry & Trade

In the heart of the Trade District, nestled among bustling markets and towering warehouses, is the Apex Spire. It is an architectural marvel, its silhouette casting an imposing figure that stands as a symbol of Pridwin's thriving commerce. But the true marvel of the Apex Spire lies within, concealed from the public eye - a hidden teleportation circle of grand scale and intricate design.   The Teleportation Circle is housed in a secluded chamber beneath the Spire, shielded from the busy comings and goings of the Trade District. Accessible only by a disguised entrance and protected by multiple layers of magical wards and physical security, it stands as a testament to Pridwin's blend of arcane mastery and practical ingenuity.   This Circle is not just a mere tool of transportation, but a work of art. Intricate patterns, carved directly into the stone floor, weave together in a complex array of sigils and arcane symbols. Each line and curve is etched with painstaking precision, filled with shimmering dust of crushed gemstones that catch the light and create a radiant spectacle of ever-changing colors.   Powered by the latent magical energy of the city and the mountain below, the Circle's reach extends far and wide, able to connect Pridwin with distant cities and realms. Its operation, however, is closely guarded by the Circle's caretakers - a small group of skilled mages chosen for their loyalty and expertise in teleportation magic.   Secrecy is paramount in the Circle's use, allowing it to serve as a hidden hub of transportation for the settlement. Goods and personnel can be transported in and out of Pridwin swiftly and efficiently, fueling the city's economy while keeping its trade routes protected from prying eyes and potential threats.   Thus, the Teleportation Circle of Apex Spire stands as a testament to Pridwin's commercial success, technological prowess, and magical heritage, a secret powerhouse driving the city's prosperity from the shadows.

Infrastructure

Pridwin, with its unique layered mountainous structure, is a testament to Accordian engineering and architectural prowess. The city's layout and infrastructure have been cleverly designed to maximize utility and adapt to the geographical challenges, allowing the inhabitants to live in harmony with the rugged mountain terrain.

Lower Layer

The lowest layer of Pridwin, often called the 'Base Tier', is a buzzing hub of activity. The area is predominantly residential, home to a mix of working-class citizens and transient tradespeople. It's here where you find the city's vibrant markets, bustling with traders hawking goods from all over Accordia and beyond.   Infrastructure in the Base Tier is robust but practical. Stone-paved roads, fed by the Accordian National Highway Network, wind their way through the district, lined by modest houses and crowded market stalls. Simple yet efficient watermills and windmills harness the power of nature, providing energy for various industries including grain grinding, metalworking, and textile manufacturing. An intricate system of sewers, considered a marvel of engineering, ensures sanitation and public health.   However, due to the high density of inhabitants and socio-economic conditions, the Base Tier also serves as the ground for the city's criminal underbelly. Secret passages, hidden alcoves, and clandestine taverns provide a haven for those who operate outside the law.

Middle Layer

Moving upwards, the 'Middle Tier' of Pridwin is a realm of industry and commerce. The presence of skilled artisans, guilds, and business establishments give this layer a distinct character. The city's entrepreneurial spirit is evident here, with innovative facilities such as blast furnaces for metal processing, shipyards for maritime trade, and fine masonry workshops producing exquisite crafts.   Architecturally, this layer displays more refinement compared to the Base Tier, with wider, cleaner streets, well-maintained buildings, and a distinct aesthetic charm. The water supply here is meticulously maintained, sourced from carefully engineered aqueducts and wells.

Upper Layer

The highest layer, the 'Top Tier', is the realm of the elite. It's home to the city's aristocracy, high-ranking officials, and wealthy merchants. Majestic manors and grand courtyards mark the landscape, offering panoramic views of the city below and the surrounding landscapes.   This tier also houses the city's centers of learning and culture - libraries, schools, and venues for artistic performances. There is also an increased presence of magic, with enchantments enhancing the infrastructure, from magically heated baths to warded storages.   At the pinnacle of the city lies the castle, the heart of Pridwin, housing the Accordian Council of Harmony. Grand bridges and paved roads lead up to it, showcasing the city's architectural splendor.   In terms of security, the upper layers have a higher guard presence, ensuring the safety of the more affluent citizens and important facilities. Despite this, rumors of high-profile burglaries and political intrigue remind citizens that no part of Pridwin is entirely free from the shadow of crime.   Throughout its multiple tiers, Pridwin stands as a testament to the resilience and ingenuity of the Accordian people, each layer a unique facet of the city's vibrant life.

Districts

Trade District: The Trade District, spanning across all layers of Pridwin, is open to everyone. This bustling hub of commerce welcomes wanderers to explore the diverse range of goods and services. However, the quality and rarity of merchandise increase as one ascends the city's tiers.   Dockyard: If a wanderer arrives by sea, the first district they would encounter is the Dockyard. Here, they could find everything related to sea travel, maritime trade, and naval crafts.   Artisan's Quarter: Home to skilled craftsmen, this district offers a wealth of local crafts and unique items that display the artistry of Pridwin's inhabitants.   Entertainment District: Whether a wanderer is looking for an inn, a good meal, or an evening's entertainment, this district would be their go-to place. It's a great place for wanderers who want to understand the city's history, culture, and arts.   Lower Residencies: Wanderers may find accommodations in the Lower Residencies, where inns and rented rooms are plenty. However, they should be cautious of the higher crime rate in this part of the city.

Guilds and Factions

Accordian Council of Harmony: This is the ruling council of Accordia, which includes Pridwin. The council's decisions directly influence the city's political landscape and financial growth. The Council establishes laws, oversees infrastructure projects, and negotiates trade agreements, all of which impact Pridwin's development.   Trade Guilds: The trade guilds in Pridwin, ranging from artisans to merchants, have a profound impact on the city's financial development. They control the flow of goods and services, impacting the economy at large. These guilds can also influence political decisions through lobbying and influence over the city's working class.   Pridwin's Municipal Body: This local governing body oversees the day-to-day administration of the city. It is responsible for maintaining public infrastructure, sanitation, and city planning. Their actions and policies directly impact Pridwin's development and living standards.   Diplomatic Envoys: The envoys from various nations stationed in Pridwin can influence the city's international trade relations and, in turn, its financial development. Their negotiations can lead to new trade agreements, alliances, and even conflicts.   The Watchers of Harmony: This faction is the local arm of Accordia's military and law enforcement. They enforce the laws set by the Council, maintain order within the city, and protect it from external threats. Their efficiency and effectiveness directly impact Pridwin's stability and safety.   Underworld Syndicates: The organized crime syndicates in Pridwin have a considerable, albeit illicit, impact on the city's politics and economy. They control the black market trade, and their influence often extends into the city's political sphere, primarily through corruption and coercion.   Religious Orders: The influential religious orders of Pridwin hold sway over a large part of the populace. Their moral and ethical guidance often influences public opinion and can indirectly shape political policies.   Dwarven Entrepreneurs from Khazadthur: Given Pridwin's proximity to Khazadthur, Dwarven entrepreneurs and traders in the city have a significant impact on its financial development. Their ventures not only boost the local economy but also enhance the city's connectivity with Khazadthur, impacting regional politics.

History

Tucked into the heart of a towering mountain, the settlement of Pridwin radiates a sense of timeless grandeur. A paragon of robust and enduring architecture, Pridwin fuses seamlessly with the mountain's veins of obsidian and quartz, resulting in an eerie, captivating silhouette that gleams under the moonlight.   To the unknowing observer, the mountain is just an ordinary geological formation with an extraordinary settlement atop it. It is a silent guardian that bestows upon its dwellers a sense of invincibility. However, the mountain is more than meets the eye. Its odd patterns and unusual weather phenomena are as mysterious as they are alluring.   The inhabitants of Pridwin, though oblivious to their true lineage, carry the blood of the Astral Touched. This manifests subtly in their lives - an unyielding resilience, a peculiar fascination with the mountain, and dreams that walk them through an ancient, cosmic dance. Yet, they remain unaware of the true nature of their heritage.   In his pursuit of understanding, the gnome, Sprig Bronzecord, delves into the intricacies of Pridwin's existence. His research unveils the existence of the Astral Gate and Astara, realms teeming with incomprehensible entities. However, Pridwin's inhabitants remain unaware of these facts, living their lives under the astral glow, oblivious to the cosmic chaos lurking just beyond their world.   Thus, Pridwin continues to stand strong, embodying an age-old testament to an intricate balance of creation and destruction, hiding its true nature under the guise of normality. However, the true mystery remains sealed within the mountain beneath their feet, a secret waiting for the right moment to awaken.

Points of interest

Pridwin's main interests lie in its thriving trade and commerce, due to its strategic location and advanced magical infrastructure, like the Teleportation Circle, which aids in its economic pursuits. As a settlement built on an ancient mountain, it has a unique geographical advantage - a wealth of mineral resources hidden within the mountain. This combination of trade and natural resources plays a pivotal role in the settlement's prosperity.
The Trade District, especially the Apex Spire, is the centerpiece of Pridwin's bustling commerce. The Spire is not only an architectural marvel but also houses the concealed Teleportation Circle, a vital part of Pridwin's trade operations. It provides a swift and efficient means of transporting goods and personnel in and out of the settlement, fueling Pridwin's economy and strengthening its trade relationships.
The mountain upon which Pridwin was built is another significant asset. It provides a wealth of mineral resources, such as iron, gold, silver, and precious gemstones. These resources form the basis of a prosperous mining industry, which supplements Pridwin's income from trade. The mountain also gives Pridwin a natural defensive advantage, making it a difficult target for would-be invaders.
However, the most intriguing part of Pridwin's fortune is the hidden depths of the mountain, sealed away and known only to a select few. Legends whisper of otherworldly power dormant beneath the settlement, a secret that could change the face of Eastrix forever.
So, the combination of an advantageous geographical position, the impressive Apex Spire with its hidden magical teleportation circle, and the bountiful mining industry make up the backbone of Pridwin's fortune.
