Expressions

A list of common idioms and phrases used by Rodinians.

"...on Earth and in Empire..."

Generally used to express shock, incredulity and disbelief.   "What on Earth and in Empire are you speaking about?"

"Like a Visian in summer."

Meaning someone who is extremely devoted to something. This comes from the Visian Rodinian's seasonal changes in the summer, where they undergo physiological and psychological changes. In summer, they become physically more robust and mentally more determined, tenacious and assertive.   "She's been working on that thing now for days, like a Visian in summer."

"Mother above!"

Generally used to convey extreme shock, duress, anxiety or discomfort.   "Mother above... what have you done?!"

"[He/she/they/it/you] have been speaking of him."

Used as an accusation or exclamation of wrong doing. It comes from the fear of speaking the former Archnadrakian's name, due to a superstition that doing so causes you to donate a piece of your soul to him, helping him to resurrect himself. Therefore to speak the name of the dead Archnadrakian is largely considered taboo.   To say that someone "has been speaking of him" (Balaine) usually isn't a literal accusation of someone speaking the name, however. Rather, it's a general quip that someone has been up to no good.   "I've been keeping an eye on things here, watching closely everything that's going on. Something isn't right. There's someone here who's been speaking of him."

Desaberate

Pronunciation: De-Say-Ber-Ate   A Rodinian word meaning to remove or strip a being (primarily a Rodinian) of their powers. From the Tenerians, where the removal of the saberteeth was greatly emasculating.   "Like all tinpot gods, he will be sentenced to desaberation and incarceration in Sagittarius-A Max."

"Busier than a Rodinian Bathhouse"

An idiom and euphemism in one. This primarily means that a place or thing is extremely busy, as Rodinian 'bathhouses' are known to be. It also contains a euphemism, as Rodinian bathhouses are not strictly just for bathing, and not primarily frequented for this. They are rather infamous gathering places for the fulfilment of all kinds of carnal pleasures and desires.   "You should have seen the spaceport today; more crowded than a Rodinian bathhouse."   It can also lean on the euphemism, to refer to something that looks good on the surface, but reveals darker or less straightforward details afterwards.   "The deal looked good at first, but rapidly became a Rodinian bathhouse as we went through the details."

Earthly Love

An expression of irony commenting on stupidity or shortsightedness that later results in bad consequences.   This has its roots in the way the Earth got tired of Rodinian species not moving on from the planet to allow her to evolve more species to intelligence. The Earth would cause natural disasters designed to make life intolerable on the planet for the overstaying Rodinian species in question.   The phrase therefore means that poor actions in the present, or ignorance, lead to a bad outcome that could otherwise have been avoided.   "The fool got his earthly love. I mean what was he thinking, flying so close to a Neutron star?"
