Titan Mammoth
Mammuthus titanis
Sauropods and other saurian ecosystem engineers do not fair well in Titanios and those that do are found further north and are of a reduced size compared to their relatives found elsewhere in the Vernean Cavern. This relatively vacant niche as well as less large saurian predators has allowed mammals to flourish near to titan size class, and this fact is showcased with the Titan Mammoth. The Titan Mammoths roam the cold, wind-swept grassland of Titanios referred to as the Titan's Steppe. Standing 9 meters at the shoulder, and armed with four strong curved tusks used for self defense and upheaving earth, this Proboscidean giant is responsible for the health and biodiversity of the Titan's Steppe, keeping the grasslands free of trees and cultivating the various grass species that grow here. Much like surface elephants, herds are led by a matriarch, however she is accompanied by a bull which acts as the guardian of the herd. Bull titan mammoths are not permanent residents of the herd however, during the warm dry season herds from all across the steppe gather in the Summer Fields, a large fertile valley, this gathering allows relatives in different herds socialize and strengthen bonds, and bulls swap herds to avoid inbreeding with related females.
Each herd has its own culture and behaviours, preferring different grasses, using unique low frequency vocals when communicating with herd members, and special rituals for certain events. Calves are greeted ecstatically by the entire herd when they are born and fallen herd members are grieved over the course of a few days before the herd moves on.
