Hanlinshou

Shunosaurus titaniosi

While Titanosaurs are common throughout the Hollow Earth, they were unable to keep a foothold in Titanios when the temperature dropped, they were then replaced by a shunosaur, the Hanlinshou, a species of small sauropod found in the boreal forests of Titanios, living alongside other ecosystem engineers like the Timber mammoth, however avoid direct competition with the mammoths through niche partitioning, while the mammoths are low to mid grazers, Hanlinshou feeds on the trees directly, a complex digestive system allow these large animals subsist on fir needles, pinecones and other seeds and nuts, and the many leafy trees found in their ranges. Hanlinshou are critical seed depositors for the forests, many trees time the production of their seeds during the hatching season of Hanlinshou young, the hatchlings feed on the seeds and deposit them elsewhere in their dung, furthering the health of the forest.

During lean times, Hanlinshou are capable of stripping bark off the trees, while the bark itself is of poor nutrition, the insect grubs nested inside can give a needed boost in protein to get them through to more plentiful times. Hanlinshou of both sexes are usually solitary, only seeking each other out for mating. Bull Hanlinshou display to the female with two nasal sacs which flair when air is blown through them, resulting in an accompanying trumpeting call, the deeper and longer this call is, the more attractive it is to the female.

Like its ancient relative, Hanlinshou possesses a clubbed tail similar to an ankylosaur. However the club on Hanlinshou is far larger than its ancestor and used with devastating effect on any would-be predator, the club also has a secondary use, allowing the sauropod to strike trees with enough power to force pinecones and nuts too high up to reach to fall to the ground.
