Dire Caracal

Caracal dirus

Stalking the cliffs of the Southern Lemurian Range is the Dire Caracal, a leopard sized caracal species adapted to the colder, windswept regions of the mountains it calls home.

Possessing a light grey spotted coat, it blends perfectly into the surrounding rock. Dire Caracals have few terrestrial predators and need only watch out for the huge pterosaurs and dragonimorphs that inhabit the mountains. However these serial predators are also a valuable source of food for these cats, dire caracals are notorious nest raiders, even true dragons can have their lairs invaded and their eggs snatched by these elusive cats. When not nest raiding, dire caracals hunt a wide range of prey; birds, mid-sized pterosaurs, mountain ungulates, and more. The excellent jumping capabilities of the caracal allow it to hunt in almost any terrain on the mountains, usually forcing prey towards cliffs and force them over, afterwards the caracal will descend and eat the fallen prey at its leisure.

Territories of different sexes have a lot of overlap, usually to ensure easy access to mates. Non-mating interactions between different sexes are usually not hostile unless food or cubs are involved. Females will have 3 to 6 cubs and look after them for up to 2 years, after that they are on their own.
