Quasar 3C 273

Quasar

A quasar is an extremely luminous active galactic nucleus (AGN). It is sometimes known as a quasi-stellar object, abbreviated QSO.

The emission from an AGN is powered by accretion onto a supermassive black hole with a mass ranging from millions to tens of billions of solar masses, surrounded by a gaseous accretion disc. Gas in the disc falling towards the black hole heats up and releases energy in the form of electromagnetic radiation.

The radiant energy of quasars is enormous; the most powerful quasars have luminosities thousands of times greater than that of a galaxy such as the Milky Way. Quasars are usually categorized as a subclass of the more general category of AGN. The redshifts of quasars are of cosmological origin.

3C 273

3C 273 is a Quasar located in the constellation of Virgo, Milky Way Galaxy.

3C 273 effective temperature is 9,879 Kelvin. Based on a parallax of 3.59, 3C 273 distance from Earth can be calculated at being 908.53 light years away or 278.55 parsecs.

3C 273 cannot be seen by the naked eye from earth 530, you will need a telescope to observe it.

Location

3C 273's location is: Right Ascension is 12h 29m 06.70, and the Declination is +02° 03 08.6.

Galactic Latitude: 64.35997633 °

Galactic Longitude: 289.95088997 °

Based on the location of Virgo, 3C 273 can be located in the equatorial region of the celestial sky. The celestial hemisphere is equivalent to the hemispheres on Earth. Being in the equatorial region, 3C 273 can be seen in both terrestrial hemispheres but there is a caveat of depending how far south and north you are. 3C 273 is on the Ecliptic. The Ecliptic is the path that the Earth takes as it orbits the Sun. As Earth 530 is titled, we therefore have Celestial and Ecliptic hemispheres and they can be different for a star.

Physical Properties

Spectral Type

3C 273 has a spectral type of Q.

Surface Gravity

The Surface Gravity of 3C 273 as measured in CGS (Centimeter-Gram-Second) is 2.766.

Magnitude (Apparent / Absolute / Visible)

3C 273's apparent magnitude is 12.88, which is a measure of the star's brightness as seen from Earth 530.

3C 273's absolute magnitude is 5.66. Absolute Magnitude is the star's apparent magnitude from 10 parsecs or 32.6 light years. The magnitude assumes nothing is between the object and the viewer, such as dust clouds.

3C 273 cannot be seen from the Earth 530 with the naked eye, it is just too far and too dim to be seen. Only objects with a magnitude of 6.5 or less can be seen on a clear night.

3C 273 Distance from Earth

3C 273's distance from Earth 530 is 908.53 light years away or 278.55 parsecs.

It is about 5,340,907,510,298,505.193 miles from Earth 530.

How long it will take to get to 3C 273

This is assuming you have unlimited fuel and travel at a constant speed from Earth 530.

  • New Horizons (Pluto probe) - 16,738,333.13 years.
  • Speed of Light - 908.53 years.
