Marvel Mansion

HISTORY

This three-story building occupies an entire city block at 890 Fifth Street on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, across the street from the east side of Central Park. George Dyer Sr.—Sean Dyer's (Armoury) paternal grandfather—built it in 1932 as his family residence, and both George Dyer Jr. and Sean grew up there. Upon the founding of the Marvels, Sean donated the building to the team through his family charity named after his mother, the Mary Dyer Foundation.

The mansion has been destroyed, relocated and rebuilt several times over the years, but the Dyer’s family butler—Edward James—has overseen it throughout most of its incarnations.

The building has a wall around the perimeter and a wrought-iron gate out front. The top floor often serves as a hangar for the team’s Quinjets, and the place has at least three levels of basements, providing ample room for large gatherings and plenty of storage. The front yard features a statue of several iconic members of the team leaping into action.

For a while, when the Marvels had independent international status, the mansion was known as Marvels Embassy. During Wycker’s breakdown that ended the team for a while, a Quinjet had crashed into the mansion, and the battle-damaged building was left in poor condition. When the Marvels assembled again, they did so in Dyer Tower (soon to be renamed Marvel Tower.)

The mansion was rebuilt for Shatterproof’s first Marvels team after the Super Human Registration Act was repealed. It also served as the headquarters for the Marvels Strike Division.

At one point, when Dyer had gone bankrupt and couldn’t continue to fund the Marvels, the mansion was turned into a super-hero-themed hotel. Sometime after that, Alex Steen (Blaze) purchased the building and had it turned into a Marvels museum that had plenty of room for the team to use for meetings whenever they liked. As part of that, he handed it over to a non-profit organization he funded that could handle the building’s bills and upkeep permanently.

In the early days after the founding of the Marvels, Jupiter and Armoury pushed the entire mansion 35 feet back from Fifth Street to gain additional privacy.

The Marvels initiated other modifications as needed throughout their usage of the mansion, such as the Zero Room constructed for Red Knave.

For a time, FAA regulations meant that the Marvels (as well as the Fabulous Four) had to relocate their aircraft to Hydrobase, an artificial island nine miles off the coast and out of FAA jurisdiction.

At one point, the mansion was attacked by the League of Evil under command of Professor Genesis. The mansion, as well as the team, was dealt extensive damage during the attack and ensuing siege. The clash between Jupiter and Meltdown was especially destructive. While held captive, James was horrendously beaten by The Rage. After the mansion was reclaimed and Genesis defeated, repairs began and eventually put the building back into working order. In the meantime, the Marvels relocated completely to Hydrobase.

Eventually, the rebuilt mansion was moved from its original position and placed onto Hydrobase. Unfortunately, Hydrobase, and the mansion were sunk when robots created by Sister Ruin (Jessica Crowley) punctured the flotation tubes and caused an explosion. Damage Control managed to retrieve the mansion, only for them to accidentally drop it, causing the building to fall back into the ocean.
