On a scientific expedition to Peru four friends and colleagues, John Ryker, Sara Steen, her brother Alexander, and Grant James, discovered the remains of an ancient Inca temple pyramid and city complex high in the Andes. Exploring beneath the temple the four came upon a large chamber at the centre of which four statues depicting the elemental gods held a large gem in an outstretched hand.
When the explorers touched the gems they were imbued by the ancient magic with the power over one of the elements. Air, earth, fire, and water. They soon realised that they could do miraculous things with this elemental force.
After returning to their home in New York City, the Baker Building, the four friends decided to use their super powers for the good of mankind and introduced themselves to the world as the Fabulous Four.
