Hollowed
The Hollowed are a sub-species of humanity that emerged in the aftermath of the alien super-weapon attack on Earth during 2037-2038. These individuals have survived or partially escaped the control of an alien infestation that reanimates dead organisms into grotesque, hive-minded creatures. The Hollowed, while physically and mentally transformed by the infestation, retain their autonomy and consciousness, distinguishing them from the mindless hordes of the Infested.
History
Origins
The origins of The Hollowed trace back to the alien super-weapon fired at Earth between 2037 and 2038. The weapon unleashed a parasitic infestation that spread rapidly across the globe, transforming living beings into monstrous entities known as the Infested. These creatures became part of a hive mind, driven solely by the desire to propagate the parasitic organism. In the early years following the weapon’s deployment, some humans who were exposed to the parasite managed to survive without succumbing entirely to the hive mind’s control. These individuals, while permanently altered, retained their consciousness and autonomy, becoming the first Hollowed.
Physical Characteristics
The Hollowed are characterized by their severely altered appearance, a result of the parasitic infestation. Their skin is often decayed or discolored, with visible signs of the parasite’s influence, such as necrosis, glaucoma, cataracts, and other unidentified symptoms. These physical changes vary widely among individuals, depending on the extent of their exposure to the parasite. Despite their grotesque appearance, The Hollowed retain full control over their actions and minds, unlike the Infested. Their bodies, though physically compromised, are often more resilient than uninfected humans, allowing them to survive in harsh environments and resist further infection.
Mental Characteristics
Mentally, The Hollowed suffer from a range of psychological issues resulting from their near assimilation into the hive mind. Many experience ongoing trauma, including nightmares, paranoia, and auditory hallucinations, often in the form of whispers from the remnants of the hive mind connection. While these mental challenges can be debilitating, many The Hollowed have learned to cope with their condition, using their unique insights into the hive mind to aid in the fight against the infestation. Some even develop heightened senses or cognitive abilities, believed to be side effects of their partial integration with the parasite.
