Geography of Eä
Eä is fundamentally an archipelago of large islands, rather than a world of continents. There are 4 main land masses, each populated by different groups. By far the largest and most populated is the western island, which has a large developed norther portions and a more wild southern portion. The other major island include a poorly explored desert to the south, a frozen mountainous area to the north, and a barren twisted land to the east.
In ea, majority of the land masses have been confined to the equator.
This is because the north and south poles are scary places. Few ships that have ventured north or south have survived, and those that did live to tell tales of the sky and sea merging to the same color of green turbulence. The conditions at sea rapidly deteriorate with every km north or south. The inhabitants of ea have many mythologies and folk tales about what the poles are made of and who lives there. The salt elves believe that two different demons that together have the potential to destroy ea are trapped separately at the two different poles. They are chained as well as magically confined but even so, the strength of their menace exuberates out into the seas. The dwarves believe that the core of ea comes to surface at the poles and deep within ea is where both gods and demons live. At the equator, they are protected because there is a great distance to the core. The vampires believe there are suns at the poles. The high elves believe the spirits of the restless dead haunt the poles. At I alma, they teach the students that in fact, our best understanding of the north and south pole based on magics is that they are sort of mines of the winds. A large proportion of the winds are generated by sublimation at these locations and such a transformation into winds is a highly volatile process (Kristopher I know you will consider this unnecessary wacky additions but humor me for the sake of exploration of ideas). This process affects the seas and winds all the way to equator. I am not sure what completes the cycle though.
Anyways, all of this means that the process that leads to sublimation of winds, can also easily disintegrate all landmasses (except those that are magically created and/or protected). Therefore, all the land is ea is at the equator. In fact, if you drain the oceans about 500m, you would see that it forms a nice almost rectangular belt.
On the other hand, there is also some magical force associated with the poles that forms the shield up in the atmosphere of ea.
So the original creation myth states that the origins of humans and elves on ea began with the death of one of the Gods. This lead to a large amount of energy being released into the universe but the Gods did not want this energy to go unchecked. Instead, they trapped all of that energy into a million life loops and deposited it on earth for temporary safe-keeping until the regeneration of the dead god/ or perhaps a new god? They deposited them in a shallow protected circle in the equatorial belt, at which point they were the proto-elves and proto-humans. Since then a long time has passed since, the protoelves have moved from their shallow protected pools to the lands around the equatorial belt. On land, they are more exposed to the magical turbulences of ea compared to underwater.
