Tree Splitter Qilin

Tree Splitter Qilin are some of the most common Qilin, spreading far and wide across most forests. Despite being common, they are some of the largest and physically strongest Qilin, and are extremely resiliant and adaptable. However, they lack considerably in magical abilities, as well as cunning, especially when compared to other Qilin. They are often likened to boars for their wildness and tusks, but are closer to a bear in intelligence and temperment.   These Qilin have a rather complex biological niche, despite seeming a simple species. As their name says, these Qilin obtain nutrients by using their tusks to split trees, then using the sap, tender wood and even the scavengers and pests within as food sources. When they do this, they inadverdently trim down the larger trees in the forest, freeing space for new growth and providing nutrients for herbivores that eat the leaves, and the decomposers that come later. During mating season, this behavior is increased, often with individual Tree Splitters creating entire clearings with large "nests" made of full-size trees in the center to attract a mate. It's theorized these nests and mating behavior are extremely complex, with different Qilin constructing their nests in different formations, using specific trees, or even decorating the surrounding clearing.   Tree Splitter Qilin have several biological benefits and advantages, for themselves and humanoids. For one, Tree Splitters have rather small horns - however, they have extremely large horizontally extended tusks, much like a blade. These tusks contain the Mana that other Qilin have in their horns, but unlike many Qilin horns, can grow back. This means that obtaining Tree Splitter "horn" is easy enough, especially after their mating season, when many shed their tusks to grow sharper ones for next year. The second is their relative lack of cunning - as of currently, many believe that Mania is more likely to affect older, and more intelligent Qilin. This idea is backed up by the evidence that Tree Splitters are less likely to become Maniacal. Finally, while Tree Splitters aren't traditional predators, their quick temper and strength means that they are rarely bothered, except by humanoids and larger Drakes - when they are, they are more than ready to put their awesome strength and deadly tusks to the test.
