Celie kept her face carefully neutral as she observed her cousin's study. Like Celie, Karanette was able to weave wonders with magic; the old blood ran strong in their family. Celie's magic was clearly very different to her cousin's, though.
Where Celie's magic was created through emotion, memory, hope and will Kara's was... Numerical. Celie's green eyes travelled over the charts of numbers on the wall, listing roots, correlations, common denominators and words. Books were piled about Kara's desk. Books were wonderful, something Celie might have in common with her cousin... But, this, too, was a difference between them. Celie loved poetry and story, where Kara seemed to collect dictionaries of foreign words.
Celie's cousin looked up at her, a smudge of ink on her bold nose. Her eyes were like Celie's in colour and shape, but that was where the similarity ended. Celie's were always alight with emotion. Her cousin's were decidedly cold and calculating, and Celie felt dangerously vulnerable as they looked at her, and the sharp mind behind them calculated swiftly.
"Water is worth more than fire," Kara said quietly, her voice the airy voice of the sleep-deprived. "But only by two. And it depends on the language you use, and how you see it... Celie, how do you make steam?"
Celie was quite sure her cousin was going mad.
Each letter has a place in the alphabet determining its value. Each digit of each letter is summed until it is a single digit.
e.g.: a=1; z=26=2+6=8; j=10=1+0=1
To determine the numerological value of a word, the value of each letter is summed.
e.g.: Ealam= 5+1+(1+2)+1+(1+3)=14=1+4=5.
Through these values, some Cetoilais are able to manipulate magic through a form of magic that differs wildly from the more emotional magic that is brought to mind when one thinks of Cetoilais mages. Numerological mages call themselves Numerologists and have the capacity for rapid calculation and an insight into the arcane energies of the world around them. Their understanding of patterns allows them the ability to manipulate these energies, limited only by the depth of their understanding and their mental stamina.
Unsurprisingly, Numerologists are almost always scions of
Moshiel. Their studies and experiences often lead them to see the world in a way most cannot understand; a swirling mass of values, laws and calculations. Numerologists, likewise, often lack an understanding of the more emotional, less logical lives of other people.
Because values are determined by the word used, and the values and relationships between numbers determine the ease with which magic may be used, Numerologists are often able to understand bits and pieces of many languages. The relationship between word, number and mathemagic application is poorly understood, however. A person who understands the word 'sky' to mean 'water', for example, may be able to use it to manipulate water. Due to the rarity of Numerologists, and their logical, no-nonsense minds, it is difficult to conduct frivolous experiments.
