Kiulúsh - Butterfly Guardians

Vynx Rubin hadn't been traveling along the paths of Jewelfrond Wood for very long when a female fairyelf suddenly took the seat next to him, while a male fairyelf jumped onto the Aldabari-Horn pulling the wagon. They both wore leather jerkins bearing the Kiulúsh crest. The fairyelf glared at Vynx, who immediately halted his small train as the fey held a copper dagger to his throat.   "Are you one of those fools who trampled everything down and scared the animals away about two hours ago?" the female butterfly guardian asked disparagingly.   "If you mean 'Madmoiselle Uona's Lightmagic,' then yes, but we're certainly no fools! We're just passing through to delight the next town with our art," Vynx countered confidently, with a hint of flattery as only an actor can. "I'm delighted to finally meet someone from the Kiulúsh," and with a triumphant smile, he added, "Would you care to accompany me to my troupe and tell me some jungle adventure stories?"

- Juggler Vynx Rubin on his journey through the Téshànian jungle -

The Kiulúsh are sentinel units in the Téshànian jungles southwest of Khaí Lúpé. The headquarters of the Jungle Special Unit is located in Taó Anúrei and is subordinate to the Téshànian Ministry of Air and Aviation Protection of the governments of Taíkhí Oúron and Khaí Lúpé. However, it operates largely independently and is responsible for supplying the outposts in the jungle, little known to outsiders, with reinforcements, equipment, and a small amount of food that is not available in the jungle.   There are approximately 100 outposts from which small units consisting of six to eight fairy elves operate. Each outpost has a self-proclaimed name, such as "Tears of the Cloud Phoenix," "Nimble Wings," or "Mythical Moths," whose location is known only to headquarters and the three neighboring outposts. Should an outpost come under threat, they can trigger an emergency chain. Each sentry unit controls an area of approximately 5 km², which they fly over daily in pairs with a Vakkara, investigating any suspicious or unusual signs of impending danger. These include smuggled transports, illegal hunts, deforestation, accidents, or even attacks on travelers.

Training & Hierarchy

Butterfly Guardian by Blue Fairy 74
All guardians are experienced fighters and trained in various jungle assault tactics. They have previously served for at least five years in one of the armies or elite units of the Celestial Master or the Imperial Couple of Téshàn. They know how to survive and feed in the jungle, are highly skilled at navigation, are masters of camouflage, are skilled climbers, flyers, and gliders, and have extensive experience with tropical diseases and other health-impairing hazards. Additionally, these units are excellent at imitating animal calls and communicating with simple hand signals when on patrol.   In each unit, each fairyelf has an additional task, depending on their rank, age, and level of training, including tactics, tracking, healing, supplying, or equipment maintenance. There are no gender distinctions within the units. Regardless of whether the unit is led by a female or a male fairyelf, everyone trusts the leader's instructions. The leader always discusses tactics with the entire team, which can suggest changes. Meetings are brief, and decisions made are not questioned, as this ensures the survival of the unit.   The units are led by a wing commander, to whom the 1st and 2nd Air Guards report. The remaining members of the team have no real rank, but over the years it has become customary for the last member to join the group to also be the last link in the chain. Their true names are unknown to the individual team members, as each member chooses their own name before joining the team. As soon as the leader is seriously injured, retires, or dies, every other member of the team advances one rank. This, too, is not questioned, as it means that the most experienced member of the unit always leads the group. For this reason, transfers of team members between individual units are extremely rare.

Equipment

Guardian's Nest by Blue Fairy 74

The jungle outposts resemble larger bird nests woven from grasses, with two entrances one above the other, hanging from the trees. These were modeled on the nests of Twinklewidahs, members of the weaver finch family.

The members' beds are located on the upper floor. Equipment and supplies are stored on the lower floor. Cooking takes place on the ground floor on small fire pits, which are always covered in the evening.

Did you know that...

  • the team members can communicate using animal sounds and hand signals?
  • the units keep Vakkaras as messengers and additional guards?
  • Vakkaras speak simple Téshànian words?
  • the guards learn how to build their huts from the Twinklewidahs?
  •
The Kiulúsh wear light leather armor with the crossbow and butterfly symbol branded into it. The rest of their clothing is light, absorbent, and in jungle colors. Each guard wears a yellow and blue headband, rolled from a pennant bearing the guard's crest. Should a pair of guards find themselves in danger, they can use it to attract attention or identify themselves as warriors.

They use simple weapons like bows and arrows and carry small daggers or knives. They are also able to craft suitable tools or weapons from any object they find. Additionally, everyone carries a small supply of pain leaves, which they can chew in times of need or use to make tea.   Each unit also includes three to four Vakkaras, a one-meter-tall bird used by the fairyelfs as messengers. These animals are trained to carry messages between individual units and headquarters. They also have innate sentinel abilities to assist the units in reconnaissance and at night. Communication is normally carried out using simple Téshànian words, which the Vakkaras understand and can also speak.

I love these guys. My favourite thing is that they communicate with animal calls and hand signals.
