Cloudpath Potions
Wendelin whispered something in Clara's ear, who then opened the leather bag and handed each of them two small bottles with a note around their necks. One glittered gold, the other glowed a mixture of pink and black. "Before we go in, we should take a sip of this," the book dragon said, pointing to the purple one and pressing the seal on the note onto the side of the bottle to open it. "What's this for?" Moritz wanted to know, removing the lid, taking a sniff, and immediately stepping back. "It stinks terribly!" As always, Wendelin rested his little arms on his sides: "Believe me, you definitely don't want to fall asleep in there, let alone die. This will help you stay awake!" ...- Excerpt from the novel -
To avoid being caught in the dark when using Mirror Gates to travel between continents or towns, the wonderful illusion of a fantastic landscape of mirror cloud paths was created. As beautiful as the landscape is, it also harbors several dangers for travelers. While some can only be overcome with quick footing and haste, there are two important potions for some travel illnesses that should never be missing from your first-aid kit: the Cloudwalker's Elixir and the Nightmare Tonic.
Cloudwalker Elixir
You can always recognize this potion by its shimmering golden color, its smell, and the taste of freshly chopped summer herbs. According to the oldest records of the Mirror Portals, it was first used around the 3rd century BCE.
It helps with travel sickness, headaches, or dizziness that can occur during a trip to the portal. It works very quickly, and since these illnesses don't affect everyone or can vary in severity, it doesn't need to be taken before the trip begins.
A genuine cloud walker's elixir consists of extracts of pearl lavender, royal anise, and iced mint. Upon uncorking the bottle, the fresh, floral scent of the ingredients envelops the nose. This alone can provide some hikers with some relief.
On the tongue, the drops have an oily consistency and leave a hint of mint licorice in the mouth.
Of course, other herbs would be effective against such simple travel illnesses, but the mixture
of these three ensures precise self-dosing within the body after ingestion, so travelers never take too little or suffer from a potential overdose. Just three drops are enough.
Nightmare Tonic
Thanks to the slimy flesh of black water plums and the syrup of sleeping quinces, the tonic is black and streaked with bright pink, constantly moving inside the bottle.
When you open it, a pungent vinegary smell immediately hits your nose and sends a shiver down your spine, which has surely deterred many travelers from taking the potion. Don't let that deter you! It's just the smell, which disappears immediately after consumption, giving way to the taste of caramelized chocolate and light orange.
Outside the portals, there's no time difference, but on the cloud paths, depending on the route, you'll spend a few hours or several days. The tonic begins to take effect just half an hour after ingestion. This is exactly when the first hikers feel the urge to lie down on the fluffy clouds for a nap. Therefore, you should take the potion before entering the portals. The cotton clouds help you fall asleep quickly, but the tonic leads the traveler into a horrific nightmare, sometimes even a terrifying death dream, from which everyone immediately awakens to continue their journey without delay. The herbs in the potion are dosed in such a way that they only lose their effect once they leave the portal, leaving the travelers with no memory of the nightmare."Oh, please—just a little nap."
Production & Sales
Both potions are produced in Aqila and distributed on all continents. Sale is permitted only in shops that trade in magical items of all kinds and whose sellers have previously obtained a corresponding sales license from the Authority for Secure Portal Traffic (ASPT).
The price for the potions is currently set at 25 Aquilenian Tolar and is subject to price control. Of course, there are always attempts to steal, adulterate, or even manufacture the elixirs, but the ASP has invented a special magical seal that is attached to each bottle after bottling. To prevent buyers from falling victim to overpriced products, the current price is magically displayed on the certificate and converted into the common currency.
The bottles can be sold individually or in a handy case. Additionally, all products come with a certificate of authenticity bearing the regulatory authority's magic seal. Only if the lock and seal are authentic can the bottles be opened and their effectiveness be realized.
Unique smells indeed and with most interesting effects who's importance cannot be overstated most clearly. The nightmare is interesting a unique way to keep safe as by the sounds of it falling to sleep for any length of time beyond the swiftest of naps could be quite dangerous. That is a most creative solution to that problem, I admire the ingenuity of it very much! Well written blue, I liked this a lot, most definitely adding it to my collection :)
Aww thank you so so much. It was really fun writing the article and I'm glad you like it.
