Brictaelgian Trolls

Like a snake, the nine-year-old Athril crawled through the tall grass, releasing the herbaceous, spicy scent of the summer meadow above the hilly landscape. He pulled a magnifying glass from his pocket and looked toward the Moss Rock—huge stones covered with various mosses. Suddenly, he heard a rustling, but could see nothing. Then, all he could hear was the rustling of the grass gently blowing in the wind. Athril looked through his telescope again as the sky darkened before his eyes and a musty-smelling shadow fell over his body.   "What are you doing here?" a deep, female voice asked in broken, barely understandable Draelgit. Athril looked up and saw two large, round, dark gray-blue eyes peering out from between the moss, leaves, and small twigs, grinning mischievously at him. He was startled. He had never seen a troll up close before and had only heard of their size. He quickly stood up, while the female troll lifted her neck and tilted her head to the side.   "Um, me?" Athril stammered, thinking for a moment. Then he bowed to the troll and spoke slowly, "I'm looking for the princess of the trolls. Have you seen her?" The troll laughed and stood up as well. She tapped Athril's shoulder in a friendly manner with her huge, clenched paw, causing him to stagger and fall to the ground. He grimaced. Then the troll bent down toward him again and trilled delightedly, "We good friend! I, Mossmutzel!" and offered Athril her hand to help him up.

There are three distinct troll cultures on Brictaelgis, but very little is known about them due to their isolated lifestyles and small populations around the rivers, forests, and rock formations along the Thointris and the Drûddâci in eastern and central Brictaelgis. There are river trolls, moss trolls, and tree trolls, who live in small clans, have little contact with goblins, and have a particular dislike for giants, who are mainly found in the western part of Brictaelgis. According to goblin stories, trolls and giants are also children of the Goddess of Earth but are considerably older than goblins.

Trolls are not stupid, but they are less intelligent than goblins. They are capable of simple earth magic, but this is limited to protecting themselves from prying eyes. They are also capable of recognizing their own and others' emotions. Unfortunately, they have a problem with impulse control and lack self-control, so they are prone to overreacting when they feel threatened or exploited.

Language

"Ol rhi sgoch! Glaich stath grorch!"
/ol r̥i sgoχ . glai̯χ stɑθ grorχ/

  "We good friend! I, Mossmutzel!"

Trolls speak a mixture of their language, Trakul, words borrowed from the original language, Ddral, in Trakul, and individual words from Draelgian dialects depending on the goblins they come into contact with.   Communication is nevertheless rather difficult, as Trakul has more sounds produced in the middle and back of the throat, while Draelgian sounds are also produced in the front of the throat.

Names

Because of their small clans, trolls have only one name, which is based on nature and reflects either animals, plants, or natural phenomena. It is given by the village elders at birth.   When troll children are old enough to be accepted into the adult circle, they are additionally given a descriptive adjective that symbolizes an important event or character trait in their life. For simplicity, the names are presented here in translated form.

Tree Trolls: Cunning Bark, Swift Woodpecker, Mischievous Squirrel, Wondrous Leaf
River Trolls: Whispering Pebble, Stormy Cichlid, Dancing River Snail, Jumping Pearl Mussel
Moss Tolls: Funny Viper's Bug, Musty Horn Moss, Gentle Anemone, Smart Green Bunny

Appearance, clothing & beauty ideal

Trolls are about 2.5 meters tall and weigh about 250 to 280 kilograms. They have very leathery, grayish skin with gray-red and gray-blue pigment spots. They wear two small, curved horns on their bulging foreheads, which they often paint with red, yellow, or white earth.   Troll women learn from childhood how to mat their curly hair and style it into dreadlocks. Hair and neck jewelry are not unknown among trolls and usually consist of simple, handcrafted snail shells found in nature, twigs, or simple stone beads.   They make their clothing from twigs, plant fibers, furs, and moss parcels, which resembles a randomly assembled patchwork quilt.

Architecture

Trolls have very simple dwellings and often take advantage of the natural features of their environment. But regardless of where they live, all troll cultures build their "dwellings" into comfortable homes using large branches, leaves, and moss.   River trolls inhabit stalactite caves or grottos near the Green River and the River of Life. Moss trolls utilize the spacious crevices and semi-caves between the mossy rock and surrounding hills. Tree trolls often build their dwellings in the hollowed-out roots of fallen trees at the edge of the impenetrable Dark Forest or in abandoned animal burrows.

Food

Meat, troll tubers, fish, yellow-fleshed giant mushrooms, red roots, and eggs are on the troll menu. Most of it is gathered or hunted. When hunting, they benefit from their ability to hide well from animals, so trolls essentially only have to pounce when a wild animal is in their immediate vicinity.   Their cuisine is simple, and troll women often cook stews or roast meat over a fire. Troll tongues have very sensitive taste buds, which is why hardly any spices or herbs are used in cooking, and everything tastes bland to non-trolls.

Those are such lovely trolls. And they are kind of like what I’m planning since two years for my own trolls.   Is the sister of Moosmutzel by any chance named Waldwuffel?

Enjoy Worldember 2025!

Sorry I got there first, and I'm glad someone else wants lovable trolls in their world.   Ah, I guess someone also loved the Traumzauberbaum? I had the chance to see the ensemble live, it was very funny, and of course we have some of the pieces on CD. They're such wonderful stories. Maybe there's a Waldwuffel among the trolls. It would certainly fit perfectly.

Oh, I love the artwork, makes the trolls look like very cozy people. The description of their lifestyle sounds very simple, but very nice. If they werent living so much in isolation, I am sure they would be great to hang out with.

At the end of everything, hold onto anything.

Thank you so much. Yes, you could probably have fun with them. They're like big teddy bears if you leave them alone.
