Waycarres
The Heart of the West
The gentle glow of mystic lights from Waycarres reflect off the polished stone bricks of the city, beckoning to any ship making its journey across the Sea of Dawn. Waycarres is poised on the coast, only a few hours' travels from the Valley of Life. The city is home base to the Xoriats, the four plutocrat-oligarchs that hold control of nearly all trade routes in Westwind, Evergloom, and much of Ember Forest. Waycarres is a trade hub for nearly any good or service one can think of, and those wealthy enough to call Waycarres home typically enjoy a variety of privileges and the finer things in life. For those less fortunate, there is always employment to be found along the docks or among the well-to-do citizens, even though that often means indentured servitude or an unpleasant home in and around the sewer systems that run beneath the streets and out about the bay. In the small district where these blue-collar workers collide with the mercantile middle-class, opportunities abound for performers, adventurers, and those of more taboo trades.
A local cult dedicated to the Patron Saint of workers, Osha, has been working tirelessly to improve working and living conditions for the proletariat of Waycarres. The Xoriats are aware of this and have been actively working to move industries out of Waycarres, but to only slight success. The Xoriats all used to live in the city at one point, but for safety reasons, they each live elsewhere now and make the trip biannually to meet with the other Xoriats in Waycarres. The new Baron and his Council are generally much more in favor of improvements to the city for the workers than the Xoriats were, meeting regularly with the dockworker union.
Waycarres draws in many visitors with its diverse culture and population. Many passers-by with short stays are really adventurers on their way to the Valley of Life, but it isn't uncommon for the wealthy of Dystelia to stay in Waycarres for an extended time. It has had the most improvements to its buildings and infrastructure since the Dark Days, and continues to rapidly expand inland with the population boom. Waycarres is not only considered the most beautiful city in Westwind, but also the largest city in Dystelia.
