Night's Edge

Beacon of the Low Seas

The southernmost tip of Mainland Dystelia, Night's Edge is as far from light and warmth as it gets. The heat off the Firelands scarcely reaches this far, and light from the daylight and North stars is mostly swallowed by the shadows of Frosturn. The waters of the Low Seas crash brutally against the cliffs, and tides roll in with a vengeance. The Dires Strait, the thin stretch of rocky waters between Night's Edge and Frosturn, claims countably many successful voyages across it. Only the great can safely sail the Sea of Dusk or the edge of the Maw of Worlds, and only the greatest make it across the strait in one piece. On the sea, on land, it hardly makes a difference. The natural world is out to get you here. It makes no pretenses.   And yet, despite everything, Night's Edge stands. The community has never been larger than a thousand at a time, but it seems at no risk of going anywhere. The sort of people who have ever interacted with a Night's Edge native probably would describe the ordeal in just one word: odd. The people of Night's Edge tend to be quite hospitable, and they are generally known for their generosity; still, one is unlikely to want to make conversation at length with their hosts. People in Night's Edge have an odd manner to them, something ever so slightly strange in their speech, that they never notice in each other. The way they move, the way they stare, there's something about them that no one can put a finger on, even those who have relocated here. They speak at length with each other about how the shadows speak with them, about the strange dreams they have each night. They mean well. Best to just leave them to it.   The average Dystelian never meets another from Night's Edge. People are drawn in to the town at some frequency, but few ever desire to leave. The people remain overwhelmingly unknown, but the town has a reputation that precedes it. On the edge of the south-facing cliffs, shining out over the Sea of Dusk and through Frosturn's whirling shadows, the Lighthouse stands. It watches ever closely over the waters and onto the far Frosturn banks. She beckons to all that tread the seas surrounding her. Without her light, no ship would ever make it across the Sea of Dusk. The villagers of Night's Edge consider it a sacred duty to protect and maintain the Lighthouse. At any given time, the Lighthouse has two permanent caretakers, and the rest of the able villagers work rotating shifts performing various upkeep. This is typically the price of staying in town as a guest, as well.   Night's Edge desires solitude. The oceans desire to swallow the peninsula whole. Despite all, Night's Edge stands, and the Lighthouse stands.
