Evergloom Regional Politics

Evergloom is the only region to have a sovereign leader over that of the individual cities: after the end of the Dark Days and during the Dystelian boom in society and infrastructure, the already-advanced Evergloom region started to become even moreso. Aside from the Barrowdowns and Waycarres, cities in Evergloom are generally the largest in Dystelia. With so much on the line, city leaders in the region wanted a way to better protect what they'd built, and what they've yet to build, with the limited resources on their lands. City leadership from across Evergloom met in Malarsend to discuss the region's political future. Broad alliances were made, and regional leadership was... well, imposed. Ostares, Malarsend, and Bellbreak participated in a vote for leadership; Auberlès was not yet considered part of Evergloom, and the representatives from Thundragar flatly refused to consent to a higher regional authority, and thus were excluded from the vote. These towns would still be forced to submit to this leadership and its requirements all the same.

It is by sheer coincidence that the first two leaders were grifters rather than politicians. The first elected Royal Pair, the Deshirs, were a married couple from Ostares with the intent to enrich themselves and the city. Admittedly, their political streak was quite successful at this. Ostares was outfitted with a rather grand political district to accommodate local politicians and the royal couple at all times, and greater regional politicians several times a year. The duo did quite well for themselves, but in the grand scheme of things, did surprisingly little harm to the greater economy. Unfortunately, after being elected themselves, they coerced other powers into keeping it within their bloodline (at least in part). For a few generations after, the Royal Pair was deemed by precedent to be an heir of the Deshirs and the one whom they married when they came of age, but in recent years this precedent has been abandoned, and the second of the pair can be anyone of the heir's choosing, including a sibling, child, other relative, or friend with no legal relationship to the heir.

The government in Auberlès is controversial, but technically meets the Evergloom mandate for leadership. [in progress]
