A man without name
I shall not give you a name that matters
There is a man out there, who says he's just another dweller in the thresholds. He carries no name, not even the moniker of nameless. To many of us, he has served as a guide, introducing us to the principles of this place we might call home. He does so with a significant load of cynicism, yet without excess, as to not plant a tainted seed. For ideas are powerful, so if an idea is tainted within one's mind, it may harm the believer. Excessive optimism and cynicism are both a danger.
He talks a lot. For a man who tells us there's no truth in words, he sure loves talking. There is so much to learn when you're a fresh dweller that has just barely began to navigate Thresholds, wandering about long before we properly understand how, our instincts guiding us to search out Power for the first time. And like some others, he guides us on this journey, helps us understand, especially that there is no such thing as perfect understanding.
You may wonder, why does he carry no name? Because Words have meaning, Names carry Power with them. There are those that seek out a Name, to wield for themselves. And it is true, there is Power in Names. Yet when one names a thing, it is a label, an attempt to define it which leaves out all the subtleness hiding beyond the reach of one's imagination. And by doing so, by boxing it in, a limit is created. Even leaving aside how Names can be used as a weapon, merely taking a Name is already a limitation to one's own Power.
That is a lesson he teaches, and that many follow. The precise way, that differs. For him, he carries no name. Others carry many. For those that don't directly follow the no-name philosophy, there are those that carry nicknames, deliberate flawed descriptors that avoid defining them so that they cannot be used against them. In the end, each take their own approach to Power, learns their own thing from the teachings of others.
So remember this about that man that will not let a name define him. He does not teach us to define us. His teachings always come with footnotes, leeway, freedom to fill in the gaps. Each person must find their own way through life, so he provides us with enough guidelines and guardrails to grow somewhat safely, yet at the same time lets us find our own way. And in the end, he teaches that even his own words are not to be followed blindly, for there is no truth in Words.
