In 643, the Welangi successfully unified the Tehanti clans, forming the Sovereignty of Nchaijiw. Prior to this, western Umbrak had consisted of fractured clans and small feudal states that had little ability to defy Khahlanong, though the eastern empire had never bothered to bring western Umbrak under official control. While Nchaijiw was still weak compared to their eastern neighbor, the new state was able to remain independent and reduced Khahlanong's control over the west, a fact that rankled Tshakuksuha.
