Shameful War

The Shameful War was a war between Khahlanong Hlusa Mfa and the Sovereignty of Nchaijiw, between 734 and 741 CE. The war began after Tshakuksuha accused the Nchaijiw of killing several Khahlanongi emissaries, an act that the Nchaijiw denied.   While the Sovereignty of Nchaijiw was putting up a strong resistance, Khahlanong was significantly larger and had a superior military force. However, the tide turned in 738 CE. Khahlanong had become increasingly bureaucratized. Most of the army was controlled by individual governors, nobles, and others who had curried favor with Tshakuksuha. As the war progressed, some of these people began to resent being kept from their territories and feared that they were being usurped from their holdings. A group of them conspired to overthrow Tshakuksuha, and while their attempt to kill the emperor failed, it began the War of Three Provinces and the Years of Chaos in Khahlanong.   With Khahlanong undergoing a civil war, the Nchaijiw were able to retake the territory they had lost and emerge victorious from the war, an ascendant power on the continent. The loss of the Shameful War became a sore point to Tshakuksuha and Khahlanong, and the two nations remained at odds until the destruction of the Sovereignty of Nchaijiw during the Khahlanong-Nchaijiw War of 988 CE.
