Infantry Helmet

Until the Last War, steel helmets were primarily worn by heavy cavalry units and were not available to rank-and-file infantry. However, the outbreak of trench warfare quickly showed the folly of this situation, with thousands of soldiers killed or injured by head wounds from shrapnel or debris. By 1344, every major nation in the war had begun issuing steel helmets to their front-line infantry, reducing fatalities significantly.   These helmets can be broken into three varieties:
  • Heavy helmets, such as those worn by the IJU Infantry, which offer some protection even against pistol fire but are cumbersome to wear for extended periods.
  • Light helmets, such as those worn by the Dornish Infantry, primarily worn to protect against falling debris or indirect shrapnel hits.
  • Medium helmets, such as those worn by the Kaisan Infantry, which offer better protection against shrapnel but are insufficient to stop anything but a glancing shot from a pistol.
A strap-on heavy-steel-plate brow reinforcement is sometimes issued to machine gunners and sentries; this protects the face.
