Autogyros
Autogyros are aerial vehicles that achieve lift through an unpowered rotor on top of the vehicle and are pushed forward by an engine-powered propeller. In order to generate lift, air must flow upwards through the rotor. However, most modern autogyros have a jump-start capability, where the rotor is initially started by the engine during takeoff. They are used where speed is more important than the carrying capacity and range offered by aerostats.
Within the last few years, developments in aerodynamics have seen the addition of wings for stability and additional lift on many autogyros. A divergent class of vehicle that relies primarily on fixed wings for lift and uses a motor-powered propellor for horizontal thrust, called the aerodyne, is in the early stages of implementation.
