Shellrock

Properties

Material Characteristics

Shellrock is a very striking stone. Its colour is a shimmering pale kaleidoscope of iridescence, even in the dimmest of lights it keeps its multicoloured sheen.

Physical & Chemical Properties

Shellrock is a solid, porous rock that forms exclusively around Duskmire. Its properties have been well studied for its magical applications. The feel of it is smooth and supple to the touch like dried seashells and is lightweight in the hand. It's very brittle and breaks with little pressure unless refined.

Refinement consists of powderizing and melting the shellrock, and mixing it with moth resin to create a hard compound material that can be used in construction of magical artifacts.

Geology & Geography

This material is found almost exclusively in Duskmire and is a controlled substance. With several Shellrock mines beneath the surface. Each mine is heavily guarded and overseen, with strict guidelines both on the procuring, transportation, and dispersing of the material.

Origin & Source

There's rumour that it comes from the outer spheres, along with the Mayor and his kin. Perhaps they brought it here.

Life & Expiration

The current length of expiry and half life is unknown for Shellrock. Magical artifacts created with the material still have potent potential under curent studies. The oldest dated artifact is about five hundred years old.

History & Usage

History

Shellrock has had a significant, but rarely spoken about role in the shaping of Duskmire. Making magics easier to use, it became a significant tool in the construction of some of its more vast structures and districts. Most notably the Temple of the Trinity, has the largest amount of refined Shellrock in one spot in their amplifier room. This allows temple-goers to establish a direct connection to the spirits they worship.

As well as most recently, Shellrock has been used to create the ornate clocktower above the town hall.

Everyday use

The most common use of Shellrock is as a magical component replacer. A pouch of Shellrock pieces can easily replace a spellcaster's need for a component pouch or a bag of holding stuffed full of trinkets.
To use shellrock is simple, crush a piece of natural shellrock in your hand, and its powderized form on your palm and cast your spell.

Another common use in its refined state is as a building material or in furnishing. When combined with certain chemicals, its magical properties become inert. Making it a safe and lavish material to adorn structures with.

Refinement

When in its powderized form, mixing Shellrock with various resins, oils, or other ingredients can produce very different effects, which adds to the magical versatility of the material.

Combining with Moth Resin, another special material found in Duskmire, its magical properties can be amplified. Wands and Staffs with this Shell-Resin compound make for excellent channeling devices. Spells can be imbued into it as well. Allowing for magic item creation.
