Rift Stones

Rift Stones are a magical byproduct of the Rift’s influence in the mortal world. They appear in crystalline clusters of translucent, sharp-edged crystals that reflect a green-necrosis light. The corrupted stones hum in dissonant tones, and glow at night or when exposed to magic. They are the result of Rift Corruption seeping through areas where the veil between Duskfall and the Rift thins for long enough or for enough Rift Corruption to bleed through into the world. Over time, this energy can crystallize, forming a physical conduit for the corruptive energy and powers of the Rift. Deposits are found in these thin places, often fused into stone and rock like crystalline moss. A typical Rift Stone Pebble is about the size of a finger. Nodules may be fist-sized or slightly larger, and Geodes may be be as big as a pumpkin. Motherlodes might grow taller than an average human.

Rift Stone Properties

All Rift Stones share the following properties regardless of size:
  • Vulnerable to Radiant Damage; as well as Bludgeoning damage from magical weapons.
  • Resistant to Acid, Cold, Fire, Lightning, and Thunder damage; as well as Piercing and Slashing damage from nonmagical weapons that aren’t Silvered.
  • Immune to Force, Necrotic, Poison, and Psychic damage; as well as Bludgeoning, Piercing, and Slashing damage from non-magical weapons.
  • When reduced to 0 Hit Points, Rift Stones erupt unless contained within an Antimagic Field. When destroyed, Rift Stones shatters releasing an effect like a Prismatic Spray spell. However the DC equal to its AC and damage vary based on the size of the Rift Stone, unless contained within an Antimagic Field.
  • Rift Stone Geodes and Motherlodes always release a random Arcane Rift Anomaly when destroyed, unless contained within an Antimagic Field.

Rift Stone Hazards

Rift stones pose a great danger to those who do not know what they are or how to properly handle them in their raw form. Many commonfolk have found them not knowing what they are, thinking they are a precious gemstone only to find themselves sickly and eventually turned into monsters. Unless stabilized, when a creature touches a Rift Stone without protective gear for the first time on their turn, or ends their turn in bodily contact with a Rift Stone, they must make a DC 10 Constitution saving throw or take 1d4 Force and 1d4 Necrotic damage and gain 1 Corruption Level (see below).

Rift Stone Harvesting

Rift Stones found in Duskfall are often found fused into the natural ground or stone and may be carefully extracted using handheld mining equipment such as shovels, picks, hammers, and chisels. Consult the table to determine how long it takes characters to harvest Rift Stone deposits of various sizes. Lacking proper equipment, extraction takes ten times as long. Motherlodes are impossible to extract without heavy equipment or powerful magic.

Uses for Rift Stones

Rift Stones house great cosmic and arcane potential. Beyond simple trade, Rift Stones are used for several purposes:   Spell Component. Rift Stones may be used as an Arcane Focus or Material component for any spell cast by an Arcane spellcaster. When an Arcane spellcaster casts a spell which requires a costly material component, the spellcaster may instead use Rift Stones of equivalent value to the required cost.   Magic Items. Rift Stones are an exceptional material for creating magical items of all kinds. Any standard magic item described up Legendary rarity could be made with Rift Stones, as well as some Artifacts at the GMs discretion. Pebbles, Cobbles, Nodules, and Geodes may be used to make uncommon, rare, very rare, and legendary items respectively.   Stable Rift Stones. The process for crafting magic items with Rift Stones renders them stable. Unless otherwise specified, characters do not take damage nor risk Corruption when they touch or handle stable Rift Stones. Stable Rift Stones are damaged and destroyed in the same manner as a normal magic item of its kind.   Rift Dust. Rift Dust is made by grinding Rift Stones against one another to create a fine powder. This milling process is extraordinarily hazardous unless performed within an Antimagic Field. Rift Dust can be used in alchemy, as a spell component, a reagent for brewing potions, or mixed into inks for spell scrolls.   Improvised Weapons and Ammunition. Rift Stone fragments may be used as ammunition for a sling or fashioned into a makeshift club. Such weapons and ammunition deal an extra 1d6 Force or Necrotic damage (determined at random or at GM’s discretion), and humanoid creatures and player characters struck must make a DC 10 Constitution saving throw or gain one Corruption Level. Stabilized Rift Stones used as ammunition will always specify the type of damage they deal. Rift Stones used as ammunition in this way are destroyed.
