Clearstone

Properties

Material Characteristics

Clearstone is the transparent, crystalline substance that allows for all magic in Dulimun. As a Clearstone's energy is used up, the crystal goes from transparent to translucent to completely opaque. Stones last several years under constant use, so frequent users go through multiple stones in their lives. Fear of this condition causes people to ration the use of magic, although the magic is quite powerful in battle and useful in daily life.

Physical & Chemical Properties

The crystals act as a battery for magic; the energy within can be applied by a magic-user toward their magic. As the Clearstone's energy is depleted, the crystal goes from transparent to translucent and then to opaque. A person can carry more than one Clearstone on their person, but only the energy from one can be used.

Origin & Source

The substance falls from the sky inside meteorites, which themselves are small pieces of one of numerous comets that regularly pass by the world and from asteroids. It takes the form of larger stones, which are then cut into smaller ones for use in the magical arts.

History & Usage

Cultural Significance and Usage

Clearstone, along with Bloodstone and Bluestone, are worn with pride. They feature prominently on talismans, brooches, rings, and other jewelry.

Hazards

Using Clearstone for magic too often for years of one's life increases the likelihood of developing Clearstone Sickness. The use of each stone increases the chance of a person acquiring the disease. Madness is associated with older people because this section of the population is also more likely to acquire it, although there are cases of onset earlier in adulthood.

Distribution

Trade & Market

Clearstone is the most valuable item in the known world, often commanding twenty or more times its weight in gold because of its rarity. It is exchanged among the kingdoms as a trade good and is often a coveted addition to any spoils of war.

Law & Regulation

Numerous laws Dulimun's kings have inscribed relate to Clearstone. For example, non-magical people are frequently barred from possessing the substance in the kingdoms of the Azimun valley. In Natiawan courts, those seeking an audience with an Axun or local lord must display their stones for all to see.
