Fear of this condition causes people to ration the use of magic, although the magic is quite powerful in battle and useful in daily life.

The crystals act as a battery for magic; the energy within can be applied by a magic-user toward their magic. As the Clearstone's energy is depleted, the crystal goes from transparent to translucent and then to opaque. A person can carry more than one Clearstone on their person, but only the energy from one can be used.
