The Reaction
The Reaction was a Manifest acting as the main defender of the group against harm. Whenever the Manifests were threatened or hurt by an identifiable target, The Reaction was responsible for taking proportionate vengeance.
The Reaction was the main source of tension between the Manifests and humanity during the era where the former held power over the latter. Crimes and punishments deemed proportionate by The Reaction were handed down from such an imbalance in power that some humans questioned the fairness of the retaliatory actions, and it was only one step further to question the authority of the Manifests in general.
The Reaction appeared at a rally to demand that Nestori stop drumming up discontent against the Manifests. Nestori initially tried to negotiate, but his own followers drowned him out by shouting at The Reaction. The Reaction lost patience with the crowd and shut them up by way of massacre. Nestori asked whether that response was proportionate, and The Reaction agreed it was not. To pay for the lives taken, The Reaction sentenced itself to death. This event set the stage for Nestori's Bargain and the end of the Manifest Era.
