Adventure Briefing

In Lolien, tensions have reached a breaking point. Amidst the turmoil, a rogue druid named Pazago has unleashed his fiery obsession. Disguised as woodland creatures, he is setting fire to cherished landmarks. The Lawmaster, suspecting foul play, enlists the characters to uncover the truth before the flames consume the city. This adventure takes place over a single day, moving from one crisis to the next as danger grows.   Pazago, Disciple of the Flames. Pazago is a druid cultist of Rodgort (destruction, fear, fire), determined to spread chaos. Once enthralled by a witch, he now suffers a lingering affliction: his body is weakened and his ability to concentrate is gone as his mind fixates only on destruction. Pazago’s attacks are swift, targeting key spots to incite fear before he retreats to the woods.

Burn it Up

Read Aloud. You wake to the sound of crackling and the scent of smoke. A desperate yell cuts through, “Help! Fire!”   The innkeeper’s voice echoes from downstairs.   Doors of rooms swing open, and other guests stagger into the hallway, shielding their faces as smoke floods the upper floor. Thick, choking air makes it hard to see.
Encounter: Inn on Fire. Characters make a DC 10 Dex save at the start of each turn to avoid catching fire, taking 1d6 fire damage on a failed save. Flames can be extinguished as an action. Each round the fire continues, the DC increases by 2.
  • Upstairs. 4x guests (commoner stats) are upstairs at the Gentle Rains Inn, requiring guidance to evacuate safely. The floor is 20 ft. high with windows in each room.
  • Cry for Help. The innkeeper is locked in a pantry downstairs. If not helped she will die in the fire.
  • Visibility. Smoke makes vision limited to 10 ft.
  • Civil Legion. The Civil Legion will arrive by Round 5.
DC 13 Investigation. After the fire is controlled, a successful check reveals a pendant marked with the symbol of Serithell (art, elves, music). The Lawmaster can identify it as stolen from the Temple of Music and Song.   DC 12 Survival. The innkeeper, Rain Norlochi swears she was attacked by a bear. Her memory is fuzzy but the door has claw marks. The marks do appear to be from a bear.

Spare Me the Details

Quentin Le'Cheff. (N/E, Halfling, Male Lawmaster)   Lawmaster Le’Cheff arrives as the fire is brought under control. A young commander stationed in Lolien, Quentin has earned respect through decisive action and loyalty to the Crown. He’s not here to calm nerves, but to get answers.
  • DC 10 Persuasion. Quentin is looking for someone to blame. If he distrusts the characters, they may be next. If they offer help, especially if he get credit, he supports it.
  • DC 14 Religion. Quentin speaks to soldiers about Rodgort.
Fires are burning across Lolien requiring the Civil Legion to aid. If characters have suspicions, Quentin encourages them. If they do not, he points them toward the Temple of Music and Song, where strange activity was reported earlier today.

Nitro

These encounters may be dropped in as the characters travel.   Environment. Trees drip fire. Each round a creature makes a DC 12 Dex save or take 1d6 fire damage. Visibility is limited to 15 ft. Civilians or structures may cause additional complications.   Encounter: Fire Spirits. 4-6x magmin are causing havoc. They burst into flame when slain and spread fire wherever they walk.   Encounter: Directed Arson. 1x salamander is ordering 1x fire snake and 4x magmin to torch the buildings, targeting the largest trees and oldest wooden structures.
DC 13 Insight or Investigation. Deliberate strategy, no random destruction. The Salamander is following “Rodgort’s” orders.
Clue. A piece of ceremonial cloth near a tree matches those used in Arda Elowen rites, hinting at Pazago’s true target.

Dirty Magic

The temple is a cultural center. The interior is partially damaged from small fires, with priests circled around a red gem. They have found a bomb in the main hall, set within a ritual circle. Inside is an elemental gemstone (red).   Hidden Bombs. There are 2x additional hidden bombs.
  • DC 13 Investigation. One bomb is behind some trees, in the shade along the temple’s outside back wall. Another is in a wardrobe on the 2nd floor.
  • DC 13 Survival. Raccoon tracks lead to accelerant caches at the temple. A priest mentions seeing an owl repeatedly returning to the same tree daily, unusual during the daytime.
  Bomb Mechanics
Disarm. Each bomb requires 3 successful checks to disarm.   DC 15 Arcana, Sleight of Hand, or Tinker Tools. Disarming a circle dispels the gemstone. If an active gemstone is removed, the elemental remains loyal to Pazago until the druid’s death.   Failure. On 2 failed checks, or trying to remove the gem, 1x fire elemental spawns, breaking the gem and attacking immediately.   Timer. The gems detonate 5 rounds after discovery, dealing 12 ( 4d6 ) fire damage in a 15 ft. radius and freeing the elemental.   Captured Fire Elemental. If contained, it reveals in Primordial that a druid is preparing for “the final blaze at the tree.”

Staring at the Sun

Pazago has set a distraction for the Civil Legion on the opposite side of town from the Arda Elowen, making it appear like a blazing sun. However, the ancient tree is Pazago’s final target. He intends to burn it down, causing irreparable damage to the town’s spirit. If the characters understand his motives they may stop him. Upon approach, Pazago greets them with a fanatical fervor, prepared to fight to the end, turning into a flaming T-Rex.   Encounter. Pazago. Pazago uses his final wild shape to become a fire-infused tyrannosaurus rex (reference page) to begin. Pazago prioritizes attacks against the tree. He is easily distracted by anyone putting out fires. If he is not stopped, the Arda Elowen will ignite after 3 rounds.

Rewards

Looting Pazago. Searching Pazago’s remains reveals an alchemist’s jug filled with oil and a holy symbol of Rodgort.   Saving the Arda Elowen. If the characters save the Arda Elowen, they receive a magical seed. Planted anywhere, this seed will grow over the next year into a Greenman Statue.   Payment Dispute. Lawmaster Quentin Le’Cheff is unavailable to pay. To receive a reward, characters must plead their case to the local knight, Sir Kyler Clemons. Kyler is tight-fisted. He argues that Lolien’s resources are needed for rebuilding and reluctantly offers 200 gold, chastising people for expecting pay.

GM Advice

This is a high-pressure, single-day adventure. The Civil Legion is stretched thin, leaving the players to act. Make it feel like they are the only ones who can reach each fire in time. Keep tension high, and let the pace drive the story.   Pazago cannot be reasoned with. His mind is broken, driven only by destruction. Roleplay ends where fire begins. If you want to use more of the religious aspects, highlight Rodgort’s influence and the spread of ideology through Pazago.
