Summer Camp Prep 2025

WorldAnvil's Assigment challenge to prep for Summer Camp 2025

I arrived quite late to this (Today as of 27/06/2025) so I'm going to be speed-running the assignments and we'll see where we are. I just made this world today although the idea of this world has been in my head for years, I only now decided, with summer camp on the horizon to try it. Although with Artfight also happening in July it's probably going to be the case that I won't be able to do both perfectly at the same time. Still, I'm obligated to do Artfight as it's my 8th year, but I really enjoy this candy dreamland concept and want to see how I can take the prompts and work with them. This article is going to look bad for a while as I'm going to focus on getting things down and submitted before I focus on doing things nicely and pretty.

Week 1 - Nourishment

Assignment 1

Think about ways the theme of Nourishment affects your world. Do people generally have what they need? What happens when they don’t?

Food is the main theme visually of this dreamland world but people don't typically need to eat. Nourishment in the sense of this usually comes down to the core strength of a soul to last and exist within the world. Monsters are nourished / or feed on the anguish or anxiety that 'spawned' them, and in order to defeat them you must internally conquer the anxiety or fear that created them in the first place. That, and a very cool battle.

FeelingKoi's Summer Camp Pledge by WorldAnvil

Assignment 2

Download the pledge document and fill it out with your goal for Summer Camp!

I'll only be going for copper this time due to the aforementioned Artfight event also happening and also because my life so far has been unpredictable and thrown a lot at me. I do want to go further with things and ideally I'd love to have diamond but I just cannot promise that and I cannot think of a way that it could work for me. Copper could be doable, though. I did try and do WA Summer Camp a couple years back and fail horribly, but the prompts felt good and enough so that I think I can get away with doing it in a non-standard world like the ideas I have here.

Assignment 3

If you found any outdated articles in your world, update the most important ones now! Do the same with your world-building meta.

Considering that I just made this world now there's no articles so there's no outdated articles but I guess I'm okay? I'm also working on speed-running the world-building meta right now and just writing what's coming to my head. I know I'll need it going forward so it's good to have I suppose. I do have some notes on goodnotes on my iPad ready to go but I'll make those articles as they come as they're very loose right now.

Week 2 - Roots

Assignment 1

Look at the cultures and areas you’ll focus on for Summer Camp, and think about how their past shaped them.

Okay so this is complicated for me because a dreamland doesn't really have a culture and I'm not fully sure how I'm going to tackle it. I'm sure there could be native people to this land but mostly everyone who would be here has a world somewhere else and it's a very brief and foreign place. I'm sure I could explore where those people come from but that's from a different World Anvil world and not this one, though I should probably merge them at some point. The idea of the dreamland is that it's a flat playing field with no overarching structure or kingdoms. I realise now some prompts are going to call for me to make cultures and kingdoms, but we'll see.

Assignment 2

Go to your world’s homepage and imagine you’re a new reader discovering the setting for the first time. What should you change to make the experience more engaging?

I probably should put some words or something here to indicate that this is an active project that is being worked on and not just a dud. Given the time I have it's not going to be polished but something's better than nothing right? I've been checking other people's articles as I'm doing this because I want to get a better idea of what I should be writing here and Janet has a good formula and system in her article that I'll be stealing for my homepage. She brings up the idea of an elevator pitch for your world, describing it as a Where / What / Who and breaking that down to mean Where (Genre/Mood/Themes), What (Conflicts/Plot), Who (Main Character/Plot) so I'll focus on trying to implement my ideas into this structure for the homepage.

Assignment 3

Find your earliest world building project. What mistakes did you make that you want to avoid? What good ideas from those early days can you integrate into your current project? Remember to take a moment to be proud of how far you've come!

My earliest world building project that I can remember was some loose notes I wrote as a kid that I no longer have access to. I don't think I can integrate any of that into my current project because it was so starkly different and I cringe too much to give any detail of it here. I think a lesson can be learned that I need to store and protect my notes better and I think using a site like worldanvil is somewhat of a better improvement from that.

Week 3 - Metamorphosis

Assignment 1

What transformations and adaptations have the people in your world gone through? What changes are going on right now… and who is trying to stop them?

Critters and creatures don't have to be hostile. Their hostility comes when they feed on the negative emotions of the dreamers that come to the realm. If no people entered the land of dreams there would be no hostility within the lands, however, there would also be an overwhelming staleness. Koi is trying to combat that hostility and find a way for the dreamers and the creatures to co-exist.

Assignment 2

Choose a new genre, style, or author, and take a look at their art! Write what you learned from them and what inspired you.

Since I put Kyary Pamyu Pamyu in my inspirations but didn't look too deep into their work I'll do that now. I knew Kyary from when I was doing my college work on Kawaii and Decora aesthetics (which I'm also drawing a lot from here) and I've seen the music videos for her songs "PonPonPon" and "Harajuku Iyahoi" although I do like the vibrant and cute theming the surrealism can get a little too uncomfortable for me sometimes.

Assignment 3

Read a couple of articles from the community, give them a like (and why not a sticker!), and write about what inspired you.

As stated before I'm quite inspired by Janet's Summer Camp Prep article as well as nnie's Summer Camp Prep article. Something about her prep and the way she present's it is always so beautifully presented and nice. One day I wish that I could be at her level of visual beauty that her whole 'world' exhibits. I suppose I should try to learn CSS at some point!

Week 4 - Tomorrow

Assignment 1

Think about current events that will impact the future. Who is working to create a specific kind of future?

Although I don't really have any strong ideas right now for what a future or grander plan for this world could be I have some rough plans. I think Dream Koi wishes for a world where nobody is in anguish or pain but that's unattainable. There needs to be wider systemic changes en mass in order to achieve a world without strife and even then it's really unsustainable. There will always be a bigger bad. I think a good future would be one where there's more resources and ways to help.

Assignment 2

Make sure everything’s ready—from your writing space to your writing schedule—before Summer Camp begins!

I've made a good folder structure for saving and storing files on my pc as well as created spaces to think and plan. I think the homework also wants me to clean my desk so I'll do that, I probably still need to keep my ipad nearby and my handwritten notes (sometimes the best way to think something out is to just physically write it down.)

Assignment 3

Who or what will help you achieve your goal? What will your sharing strategy be during Summer Camp?

In the pins of the summer camp chat of the discord there's a link to a google sheets prompt tracker that I made a copy of in anticipation of this event. I used one when I tried to do World Anvil Summer Camp in 2023 and it helped a lot, even though everything there was a mess, it was slightly less of a mess because of the structure the sheet provided. Alongside that I'll be using my iPad for Goodnotes and Procreate, since I'm a very art-based person I want to try and art-as-i-go but I'm not fully sure if any of that would be even viable. I also have Krita and a drawing tablet on my pc but I'm still learning Krita so it's not the best for making art at the moment. Other than that I'm mostly flying blind but we'll look and see how we get on, I suppose.

Your ideas for the theme of metamorphosis are pretty intriguing. Have fun with SC and congrats on creating this world! Best of luck :)

Thank you! I hope you have a good SC as well if you're competing! As for the metamorphosis it's part of the main crux of the conflict within the world. I do look forward to elaborating on it though.
