History of The Dread Realms

The true origins of the Realm of Dread remain a mystery. Through the veil of allegory, the creation myths of numerous traditions, including the legends of the Vistani, hint that the Dark Powersand their sinister realm may be as ancient as dread itself. Sifting a common theme from these often contradictory tales, the Realm of Dread may have crept through innumerable eons, forever ebbing and flowing in an eternal cycle of expansion and decay. If so, then the creation of the domain of Barovia merely marked the birth of a new cycle of torment — and the death of whatever came before.

    As the noble houses of Barovia struggled to rebuild from their losses, Strahd claimed sovereignty over the lands he had liberated from the Tergs as his reward and settled into the mountain fortress of the last Terg, dubbing it Castle Ravenloft.   Count Strahd's new subjects hailed him as a conquering hero, but the decades of war and the endless parade of death had hardened Strahd's heart. His reign, like his war torn life, held no room for compassion.

    Strahd Brings Outsiders to Barovia

    Count Strahd brings a handful of groups to Barovia to assist with civil improvements in his newly settled country. One such group was two rock gnome families from Faerun.

    Count Strahd von Zarovich brings the McAlpine gnome tribe from another world to Barovia. He has them assist in the rebuilding and fortification of Castle Ravenloft.

    McAlpine Gnomes Betrayed

    Unknown to Count Strahd von Zarovich, the Burgomaster who was in charge of paying the McAlpine family for their work on the castle did not honor the contract. Once they demanded their pay, he exiled them to the southern mountains of the region. They became miners within the mountains until, they found a niche that the area needed: roads. So, the family became road builders.   The McAlpines, are also unaware that the Burgomaster acted on his own and this "injustice" has not yet been corrected. His family is now the same Burgomaster that is in charge of Orasnou, the last of his line.

    The wedding of Sergei von Zarovich and Tatyana turns into a massacre through Strahd's murderous rampage and the treachery of Leo Dilisnya. Barovia becomes a domain.

    A tribe of lizardfolk are carried to Barovia by the Mists of Ravenloft and settle in Ivlis Marsh. The reason/cause of their arrival in Barovia is long lost to the tribe members and those in the region.   The Dark Powers very well know what caused the appearance of this tribe. It was because of an ancient ritual that was conducted by their chieftan who sacrificed hundreds of humans to Sess'innek, a demon lord. He believed that Sess'innek would grant him powers that would allow him to become king of all lizardfolk.

    Count Strahd Von Zarovich discovers that Leo Dilisyna was hiding in a monastery on the flanks of Mount Baratok, overlooking lake Baratok. It was on northwestern "spur" right at the border. He was going by the name Henrik Stynmen.   Strahd ended Leo's life, but not his existence. He made him a vampire and then sealed him away in a tomb on the Wachter Estate to be driven mad by hunger before eventually expiring of it.

    Martyn Pelkar

    A young boy named Martyn Pelkar emerged from the Svalich woods, claiming that a luminous, sylvan being had rescued him from the beasts that had slaughtered his parents. Though often dismissed as a madman, Pelkar would spend the rest of his life establishing what is today known as the Cult of the Morninglord.

Sasha joined the cult after his family was slain in a home fire in the Village of Barovia. His father was the former Burgomaster of the Village of Barovia. Sasha's sister is also a member of the cult.

    Azalin Rex's Arrival

    Azalin the Lich enter Ravenloft and finds he is in Barovia. Azalin enters the service of Count Strahd, though it is not long before they have a falling out and Azalin is removed by the Dark Powers to his own realm after a failed coup attempt.   In the year 472, Darkon appears and Azalin is made its Darklord.

    A Book Forgotten

    While a Kinder (halfling like race) is roaming the City of Doors (Sigil) he comes across an ancient tome. Uknown to the kinder this tome contains a secret of how to enter the Dread Realms.   He unintentionally leaves the tome on a bench outside of a ancient magic shop in the city. Another individual that happens to be a follow of Vecna finds the tome and carries it away to his domain.   After some time studying the tome he realizes the secret it holds and immediately uses it to his advantage to petition Vecna for Lichdom and Vecna commissions this newly born Lich to form an army to take the land of Barovia from Count Strahd.

    Vecna finds a dark wizard whom seeks Lichdom and he rewards the individual with Lichdom. He sends this Lich to the lands of Ravenloft in an attempt to over throw Count Strahd von Zarovich. This Lich is stopped after the intervention of a group of adventures, the Raven Queen, and Count Strahd.

    Several individuals are delivered to Barovia from various other worlds by the Mists. No one knows, at least initially, why they were brought to this land of the damned. This group consisted of a varity of races and backgrounds.

    After a very long series of events the group of strangers that had been brought to the Dread Realms manage to defeat Vecna's servant Lich on the Lake of Vallaki with the aid of Count Strahd von Zarovich, of course.   The strangers were very shortly carried away by the Mists to lands unknown.

    Martyn meets Jander Sunstar again, recognizing him as his god. Jander denies this but Martyn feels enlightened. Later, Martyn dies from sickness, a "dark growth" haven slowly consumed his innards. Sasha mourns, having been raised and instructed by Brother Martyn for nearly a decade and a half.

    An Ancient Mystery

    While the whole story has not been learned, and it very well might be a myth, there is evidence that a group adventurers have previously ventured into the the Domains of Dread.   Some have found articles that date back to roughly 480 to 485 that reference a lich having trespassed into the land of Barovia in an attempt to take power from Count Strahd. Not a lot of details have been discovered though it was learned that a group of adventurers did come along and defeat this aforementioned lich.   It was said that one tablet had a sketching of what appeared to be a halfling, dwarf, cat girl, fox girl, elf, and devil. Below them was the word Midnight. The scholars have assumed the word implies that this was a time frame known as the Midnight Hour.

    This nameless holy figure, whom others call the Abbot, was drawn to the abbey after Saint Markovia died by Strahd’s hand. He sought to restore the abbey after it fell to corruption.   More than a hundred years ago, he was sent from the Upper Planes to honor the legacy of Saint Markovia. He reopened the abbey and began tending to the physically and mentally ill. In so doing, he hoped to bring some much-needed light to Barovia. His efforts worked for a while...

    The Abbot’s fall from grace started when the Belviews—a family of sickly, inbred lepers—came to the abbey seeking salvation. The deva rid them of their diseases, an act for which they were eternally grateful, but could not cure them of certain human defects that had been present since birth.   The Abbot became consumed with a prideful, obsessive desire to rid the poor Belviews of their lingering imperfections. The Belview family, however, had strange ideas of what it meant to be perfect. They didn’t want to be ordinary humans.   They wanted the eyes of a cat, wings to fly like a bat, the strength of a mule, and the guile of a snake. In short, they craved bestial traits, and the Abbot, taking pity on them, yielded to their mad desires.

    Vasili von Holtz arrives in Krezk and offers the Abbot a "Dark Gift" from the Amber Temple aiding him in transforming the Belviews as they had asked. The Abbot realizes after the deed was done, that Vasili von Holtz was none other than Count Strahd von Zarovich.

    A small group of families set out to the north from the village of Barovia. They are forging a path into the Balinok mountains with the hope of establishing a precious hunter's outpost there that will allow them to make a better life for their families.   The figureheads of the Grelon, Wurlbach, Vaduvas, Falinescu, and Randovich families each acquired deeds from Lord Strahd von Zarovich for their service to his court. They established a deal with one of the Vistani tribes to aid them in their journey to the Balinok mountains, as well.

    Vaduva's Curse

    After the Vaduva's had assisted the settlement of Orasnou to get established in the northern lands of Barovia, they had made a deal with the Vistani. They promised that they would ensure the settlement was able to provide the Vistani with furs, food, and similar items every fall when they would pass through. They swore that they would do this as long as the Vistani ensured that the Vaduva family held the "Burgomaster" position.   This continued for the first five years of Orasnou's existence. Even though the village never managed to become a mining community, they did thrive off of their trade with the Vistani when they passed through.   In the fall of 515 the had a very slim harvest, as the rainfall had not been as forth coming as previous years. They also were not so fortunate when it came to their trapping of animals in the forests. Many believed this was Count Strahd von Zarovich being hateful for spite of the village's success.   When the Vistani came looking for their promised the supplies the Vaduva's refused to give the share that was promised. In return the Vistani cursed the family with lycanthropy and banished them to forever live in the forests around the village.   The family still continued to trap animals and provide furs, meats, and such to Orasnou however; they were replaced as the Burgomaster by the Randovich family.

    The humans of Barovia begin extracting wood and similar resources from the marsh. They find themselves at odds with the Lizardfolk of the Ivlis Marsh during this time. Count Strahd eventually steps in and defends the Barovians against the lizardfolk.   The attacks on the Barovians continued which causes Count Strahd to step in and he cursed the lizardfolks shaman's as a price for him longer using the resources that are rightly his.   This pact ensured that the Barovians would no longer attempt to harvest the swamp's resources, however; the shamans of the lizardfolk tribe would not find any pleasure in the touch of other living creatures, as well.

    The Present

    These are uncertain times for the Realm of Dread. A growing sentiment among its people holds that the world is steadily creeping toward some inexorable fate, but no one knows what that fate will be. Doom prophets speak of the Time of Unparalleled Darkness, predicted to arrive in a scant twenty years, but clerics of the Morninglord proclaim that the long night that fell on Barovia in 351 will finally reach a glorious dawn.   One thing is certain. Whether Ravenloft's fate lies in darkness or light, it will be mortals — be they heroes or villains — who choose its destiny.

    In Orașnou, Laszlo is a sellsword that prefers the solace of the forest over the company of people. While on a hunting trip, he watched Alina Vaduva quickly take down a bear in the form of a wolf, and was awestruck as she reverted to her human form to clean the beast. The fact that she was a shapechanger did not bother him in the slightest— because again, he had grown accustomed to the wild things in the world. He was smitten, though Alina chose to withhold knowledge of her family’s curse from him. Their courtship was fast and passionate. Within a year, they were married and Laszlo took Alina's surname. Together, they found a niche in trapping and skinning. They sold the furs to the village of Orașnou, and in return, were given both a place to live and a community to belong to—something that Alina was secretly unsure of. But she had never received such generosity, and they weren’t pressed with inquiries of what they did before coming to the sleepy little village.

    This winter season is expected to be especially worse than previous seasons and a strange storm rolled in the previous night. One might think it strange to say anything in particular in the land of Ravenloft is strange, though this one was particularly strange in the sense that it was accompanied by the dread mists of the land.   Portions of the forest have grown disquiet and are alive with a new disturbance – one which the villagers are not ready to face. The Mists have transplanted entire chunks of both the Quivering Forest and the Glumpen Swamp (from Faerune) over the Svalich Woods, and though the mountain villagers of Orasnou in Barovia have heard of neither, they know deep in their bones that the coming winter will be the likes of which they have never seen.

    The village defenders rounded the bend of the trade road which lied south of town and witnessed the wreckage of a caravan of two wagons, each completely stripped of valuables and tipped on its side, presumably in order to find smuggling compartments. four bodies lie strewn about, the majority slashed to death with bladed weapons. In addition to the dead guards and merchants, 4 horses have also been cut down.   This was the scene a few days ago outside Orasnou.

    Adventurers Arrive

    At dawn a mist rolls away from the outer edge of the village of Orasnou revealing a small group of strangers. Among these strangers is what would seem to be a female dusk elf wearing cloth robes, a male albino tiefling who wears leather clothing, a human female that wears the armor of a fighter, and a humanoid lizard that bears the clerical armor of the Morninglord.   It is not long before the bewildered group cautiously enters the village and meets Gregori Wurlbach, the owner of the town general store, and barber which bears a catchy name, "The Hare and Hair".   After a couple hours of exploring and talking to the local the group learns Laszlo and Alina's story and decide to go in search of the community's local trappers.   As the party of adventurers prepare to depart they hear a yelping animal and when they find it, it is a new born wolf pup with silver fur. Gregori states that it turned up tied to Glovia's door four days previously. Gregori promises to look after the pup and the group continues out of the village.

    A Splash of Blood Hawks

    The loosely banded group that was myseriously brought to the northern lands of Barovia spends a considerable time moving in the general direction of where they believe the trappers had gone.   The forest had been fairly quiet for the journey, however; after about an hour the trees aghead became positively alive with the excited chittering and cawing of hunting birds. They took wing after hardly a breath and attacked the group.   It is not the easiest task, however the group manages to dispatch the birds and then find a decomposing body of what use to be a human male below the tree they were in. It would seem they were defending their meal.

    The party spots a campsite, but as they draw close the group realize that nothing lives there. There are obvious signs of a struggle--long scrapes in the dirt, fresh boot tracks, and a damaged corpse give away the scene. It is clear that a blizzard is moving in quickly from the mountains to the north and they are quickly running out of time to get back to safety. Teh air has become sharp and crips, and is almost still as the clouds prepare to break and shower freezing doom upon the land.   They discover a partially ravaged body and several items among the remains of the campfire. One of the items they find is a silver dagger. Before departing the area, they meet Aya Glenmiir, a bewildered elf and her two compatriots. They were brought to Barovia via the mists, as so many before them.

    Does a Bear Sit in the Woods?

    The weary group of adventurers come upon a strange situation as they continue to search for Alina Vaduva.   A very dead bear sits, leaning against a tree slightly off the path, its belly horrifically distended. The stench is overwhelming, even from nearly forty feet away.   The party is smart and manages to deal with the corpse at a distance. They proceed to kill the centipedes that come forth from the corpse.   As they continue along two of the group experience strange sensations. One seems to see the trees warp and twist in front of him, and the other gets a strange stabbing pain across their abdomen. These sensations fade away as quick as they started.

    Wolf Den & Finale

    The characters come upon a cave and begin to explore it:   It was quite apparent that it was a wolf den. Broken, gnawed bones littered the floor, and scraps of fur from a large number of animals were shredded and scattered about the cavern. The smells of offal and rotting meat competed for attention, and the results are exactly as you would expect. As the adventurers take in their environment, a loud peal of thunder reverberated around the cave—the storm outside had finally broken loose! Freezing rain and hail begin to pelt the cave entrance, and howling wind tears through the forest.   After the crew had spent some time investigating the cave:   The sound of baying wolves breaks the silence. A moment later, a young, silver-haired woman with an immense wolf in tow stumbled into the den; gasping in agony with a bloody hand clasped over her belly. As she saw the group, her face contorted into rage. She spat a curse; flecks of blood danced on her lips. Her curses turn into a throaty growl as she falls to her hands and knees. Her body contorted and twisted as her form changed to that of a large, silver-furred wolf. The beast throws its head back and howls, and then charged at the party.   A battle raged in which the group eventually came out on top as the victors. They captured Alina and took her with them back to the village.

    Return to Orasnou & a Hanging

    The party arrives back at Orasnou surviving the journey back and the nasty weather that had arrived. They made much better time this go around.   After turning Alina over to the village leaders they begun to make their way to the local inn called Seven Tables Inn.   As they departed they, unfortunatley, witness the burgomaster hanging Alina from his roof top.   He stated "Teh moon has cursed this girl", and then hung her.   Knowing there is very little they could do, the group continues on to the Inn. On the way they learn that the wolf pup had been frightened by the storm and ran away.

    A heavy shroud of snow has blanketed the village of Orașnou. The party of adventurers find themselves inside its only inn, The Seven Tables, preparing to eat their first hot meal that they have had in days.   The common room was filled mostly with locals, many of them hunkered down waiting for a break in the blizzard to return to their homes. An aura of fear and superstition permeated the room, as the villagers engaged in discussing rumors as they waited. Marku Grelon and his servers placed a plate of stringy meat, potatoes, carrots and a mug of mead in front of each of you.

    Another Dreary Night

    "The Fanged and Furious" are relaxing in the tavern after a long hard day as they take in the various conversations happening around them. Tensions are high as many are blaming the curse on the lost wolf pup, others blame it on the newcomers, and some say it is no one's blame at all.   They learn about many things to include a local shop keep that has been coming buy new merchandise thanks to a stranger selling them. The heroes choose to go investigate and stumble upon the questionable stranger making a sale that very night. As the evening progresses the stranger, manages to escape but not before dropping his raccoon skin hat.   They party comes across a horde of zombies and ghouls attacking the city square and manage to save the day, but not all the persons that were in the village when the attack started.   The burgomaster meets back up with the group at the tavern later that night and accuses of having caused all the troubles before being waved off by the bar keep. Once Burgomaster Randovich storms out the party decides it is time to get some well-earned, and no doubt needed, rest before anything else might happen.

Once the storm breaks, the Innkeeper asks them to go in search of his family that has been missing for a time now.   They manage to find the family member nearly dead not far from town along side his half eaten horse. It appeared that the person was attacked by a wight, which was discovered when Karinya attempted to feed off the boy.   The group receives a vision from a Vistani woman in which they witness Laszlo beheading Glovia's daughter after taking a silver powder box from here. They are then torn from the vision when the village somes under attack by undead.   They manage to thwart the attack, but Laszlo, the ring leader, escapes again. They then go to Glovia's estate and rescue a little girl and her father. Glovia Falinescu attempted to use the girl to raise her own daughter from the dead.

    The group, known by the community of Orasnou have received a manor gifted by Count Strahd through Burgomaster Randovich. They spent a week getting settled in, and moving new furniture and other items from the old Falinescu Manor to theirs.

    Morninglord Temple Established

    After much hard work proselytizing the local citizens of Orasnou Rupta manages to convince one of the local citizens to convert to serving the Morninglord. Albert Munteanu had an old building that he willing donated to the cause of the Morninglord, and spent the next 24 hours converting it to a make shift temple.

    The adventurers head out into the forest to find the Bogarav family whom they were told might be able to assist them with their recent vision. While wondering in search of this Vistani family Feyre is startled by ravenous bears when she attempts to summon her familiar with her whistle of calling The group does manage to dispatch the bears without any of their party falling.

    The party of adventurers eventually find and meet with the Bogaravs who entreat them to deal with an outcast that is seeking the love of one he should not seek. while there Tyberon manages to dance with Annika, one of the Vistani girls, so well that he becomes highly known for his skills in dance. The group tracks down, captures a vistani girl who became a vampire and manages to deal with the outcast.

    Well Dress Visitor Arrives

    Recently, a well-dressed visitor arrived in town. Somehow, he quickly gained the confidence of the townsfolk. Farmers and vendors sought his guidance. Laborers and smiths sought his assistance. And a pair of young lovers, Benedek and Sari, sought his blessing in uniting them in marriage, and he has promised to aid them in that endeavor.

    The following day one of the Bogarav family members turns up missing. The group is asked to find him. Along the way the adventurers manage to save some elves and the Vistani man from a group of ettercaps but not before creating a massive forest fire thanks to a miss-placed spell. They then meet with Jeny, dispatch a ghost that is harrassing her, and receive a dream that very night in answer to their question concerning the vision Sybil gave them.

    Locals Destroy The Morninglord's Temple

    Each adventurers has a few interesting experiences over this period of time, but the event that stands out the most is the destruction of the local temple in Orasnou. Several goons destroyed the temple furniture and warned Rupta and his follower from rebuilding it.

    The Innocent

    The adventurers are summoned by a local villager as she was worried for a couple that left the village with a stranger that has not been in the community for long. The adventurers venture out to find this couple only to discover they had been sacrificed on some strange shrine.   They spend the next couple days tracking the "Visitor" that had been involved only to find a orc and yaun-ti camp. While they were fighting/dealing with the monsters the Visitor was able to finish, whatever he had been attempting.   We a surpise roar of some type a large monstorous troll like creature burst out of the camp underground tomb. Along with him they witnessed an incubus, they can only assume was the visitor exit.   The last that happens:   “You are all in grave danger,” Sari says, biting her lip, “return to Orasnou and tell….” Without warning, the spectral form of Graxxygak materializes behind the girl. The brute clamps a hand over the young woman’s mouth, cutting her words short before the pair of them disappear. As quickly as it happened, Graxxygak and Sari are both gone. Faint to the point of being almost inaudible, you hear Graxxygak’s rough voice say “the pretty lady finally gonna get you gloves.”

    The party of adventurers is summoned to the Burgomaster's home where the Burgomaster and his tax collectors seek the groups help finding ways to resolve their issue of not having sufficient tax money to pay Count Strahd.   The meeting is interrupted as the group go with the Burgomaster to discover that the sheep that have been put aside for Count Strahd were all slaughtered.   The Burgomaster requests that the one shepherd present be detained and the party loses their patience with the Burgomaster. They murder the Burgomaster, and his tax collector.   They do discover that one of the tax collector's was not all he seemed to be and that he had become monsterous due to a curse. After a very long fight the cursed official is slain.
