With the withdrawal of the Gods, mortals inherited the mantle of the Dawn War. The Elves of Ishar saw an opportunity to return to their former glory. The Paladins of the Dawn refused to let this happen.

Since the sundering of Ishar during the Dawn War, the Ishar Elves had been waiting for an opportunity to reforge their empire. The formation of the Divine Gate was this opportunity. Mustering as much strength as they could, the Elves began a campaign of subjugation across the continent. Although not seeing themselves as the conquerors, it had been many centuries since they had ruled the lands they sought to "reclaim", a fact that led the Paladins of the Dawn to take up arms against them.
