Magic Draining

A recent breakthrough in engineering and research led to the development of magic draining, a technology which allows dragons to drain magic from another dragon. Originally developed as a way to safely imprison magic-capable individuals, the ability to store magic in a way that lets anyone use it has enormous potential. For now, the technology is still newly developing, and sees little use even as a restraint, but according to many, magic draining could change the world forever.

Discovery

For a long time, research into magic and magic use has been a hot topic among dragons. Especially important is ways to stop it, to reduce one's ability to cast magic after they're already trained. Most cultures which believe in prisons and lock-ups to punish law-breakers rely on especially heavy punishments when the dragon in question is capable of magic, as a well-trained caster can weave magic with a single twitch of a finger or a soft-spoken word.   Finding more humane ways of dealing with this is important to many. A breakthrough in how to sense magic with technology allowed these researchers to use it specifically to tap into the magic inside a dragon's body, and with that, find a way to remove it. Temporarily, anyway.

Utility

Originally developed as a safer way to restrain magic-capable dragons, by (temporarily) making them incapable of using magic. There is enormous potential, however, in the ability to take magic and turn it into something anyone can use. Magic can be drained from dragons who can't use it themselves, then made into something they can use. It's a technology with enormous potential, and actively in development because of it.   Unfortunately, magic draining is not without dangers. Magic depletion is a serious risk if the draining is not done correctly, and the technology can easily kill dragons with little to no mark to prove it.
