Magical Energy
It is not fully understood where Magical Energy comes from. The Gods do not give any insight on the matter and the best attempts of mortals to understand it are often in vain. Magic seems to come from another plane of existence that is distinct from both that of mortals and the Gods. What can be said for sure is that it seems to seep into the material world of its own accord.
The scholar Sonoda Kinuko gathered the works of past scholars, along with many years of her own research, into a renowned treatise on all things known about Magical Energy called On the Arcane: Magical Energy and Its Practical and Theoretical Applications. This work, often shortened to The Arcane, proposed a structure by which Magic could be at least partially understood in its workings allowing for safer methods of its use. It also refers to The Chaos Factor as an all encompassing term to refer to the margin of unpredictability that exists whenever Magical Energy is utilized.
Magical Energy, in its natural state is an inert and invisible gas-like substance. Sonoda calls this substance Aethegen and defined a unit of measure for it named after herself usually abbreviated as SK. 1 SK is the maximum amount of Magical Energy that could contained within the smallest Drakokrystal that could be found at that time. While Aethegen is described as gas-like it is not made up of an actual physical substance, but it does have some similarities in its behavior. When in higher concentrations it begins to glow. As the casting of a spell requires that Magical Energy be drawn in and concentrated, a glowing fog around a person always gives away to an observer that some kind of spell is being cast.
