Queen Thamasin
(a.k.a. The Courtesan Queen)
Queen Thamasin had a lowly start to life. She came from common stock and as a young girl found employment as a serving maid in the Palace of Valdencaul. There she caught the eye of Prince Oluthir and became his mistress, a position she retained when Prince Oluthir became king. Initially, she enjoyed her position and the status it afforded her, but when Oluthir became king it quickly emerged that he was not a good person, a terrible king and an even worse lover. He would beat her, publicly humiliate her and ignore her for months at a time. Furthermore, she found that her association with an unpopular king was making her unpopular too. Then she overheard Oluthir saying that he had poisoned his father because he tired of waiting to accede to the throne.
Angered by this revelation, Thamasin slowly but surely organised a rebellion against Oluthir which eventually led to a full civil war. Thamasin discovered that she had natural charisma and leadership abilities and became the focal point of the war.
When the war was over and the rebels won, Thamasin was the natural and popular choice to become queen.
