World Info Dump

  • Dra'cora's name is pronounced [drah'koh-rah] and means "dragon's dawn". It was chosen to honor the sacrifice of the two dragons who created the Pearl Egg, which gave the colony new hope and a chance for survival.

Basic Planet Information

    • 4th from its sun in a 7 planet system, outside the habitable zone
    • Slightly smaller than Earth, with similar gravity
    • Mostly hilly and rough terrain, bare, rocky and covered with impact craters. There are also ravines, mountains, glaciers and volcanoes.
    • Dry and arid with a thin nitrogen atmosphere. Humans could go outside with just a respirator in that atmospheric pressure--if the air wasn't toxic and below freezing.
    • Has one large frozen sea, Heartholt is to the northwest of it, in the northern hemisphere, 45 degrees Latitude.
    • The sun is a white star which casts sharp, very black shadows, and appears half the size of Sol as seen from Earth
    • Sun moves east to west. Daylight is 3 times dimmer, like Siberia in fall during daylight hours
    • Nighttime is the same as on Earth due to Dra'cora's moons.
    • Average day length on Dra'cora is 20 hours. The sun is directly overhead during summer solstice, and below the horizon during winter solstice.
    • 1 local year = 1981.02 local days, or 1,650.85 Earth days, or about 4.5 Earth years.

    About the Moons

Dra'cora has 2 tidally-locked moons. The closer one was called "Drunken Dancer" due to its rapid phases and backwards movement, but the name was later shortened to "Dancer". The further one is called "Hunter", "Digger" or "Diver" (depending on who you ask), due to its own odd movement and long absences from the sky. Hunter moves east to west across the sky, but Dancer moves west to east. Hunter appears two and a half times bigger than Luna does from Earth on average, and Dancer appears four times bigger.   It is common to see one of Dra'cora's moons in the sky on a given day, but to see both is rare. Hunter rises and sets over 5 days, while completing its orbit in 25 days and 10 hours. It appears full most of the time, while shrinking and then growing when seen. Dancer rises and sets over 2 days, 5 hours, while finishing it's own orbit in 3 days and 15 hours.   Months are marked by Hunter's appearance in the sky, while weeks are counted by Dancer's movements. Dancer completes 6.8 orbits for every 1 of Hunter's.
